Hawaii Fire Department reported that Sunday evening there was a serious two car accident on Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway 300 yards south of Nani Kailua. Fire Dispatch received the first call just after 7 p.m. A Volkswagen sedan and a Ford full size truck with a fifth wheel trailer with five horses inside collided. The drive and passenger in the truck, 20 year old sisters, were able to get themselves out of their vehicle and were ambulatory. Both were transported to Kona Community Hospital. The driver of the sedan, a 21 year old man, was a fatality who needed to be extricated with the Jaws of Life. Hawaii Police Department is investigating.
The victim was identified as Brian Anthony Margate of a Kailua-Kona address.
Responding to a 7:06 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that a 20-year-old Kailua-Kona woman was operating a 2005 Ford F-350 pickup truck and towing a horse trailer when the vehicle crossed the center line and collided into a 2001 Volkswagen 4-door sedan being operated by Margate.
