Big Island Winter Evident Atop the Mountains

Mauna Kea has a covering of snow, and the Mauna Kea Access Road is closed and not expected to open all day.  Snow removal operations will begin later today but the forecast is for continued cold and windy weather.

The temperature at the summit around 6 a.m. Wednesday is -3 Celsius, or around 26 degrees Fahrenheit.  But there is also a 20 mile an hour wind, bringing the effective temperature, with wind chill, down to around 12 degrees.

Mauna Loa also has snow, with the current temperature at about 0 degrees Fahrenheit and wind of around 9 miles an hour with gusts to 11.
