Hawaii County Fire Department arrived at the scene of an accident Thursday morning on Highway 11 in Mountain View near Old Volcano Road to find a woman trapped in her vehicle, with a dump truck on its side, fully engulfed in flames, with live electrical wires on the ground.
Firefighters arrived just after 9:15 a.m. They used the Jaws of Life to remove the woman from the vehicle. Meanwhile, other personnel were able to get the fire under control within minutes and fully extinguished by 10:13 a.m.
Hazmat crews and Hawaii County Police were also on scene. The State Highways Department cleaned up the road after the vehicles were removed. The highway was reopened by 1:30 p.m.
The Fire Department provided no information about the condition of the female passenger nor the driver of the dump truck. Damage was estimated to be in excess of $100,000.
