Kona Library Has Family Read Aloud Tuesday

The Friends of the Libraries, Kona, is sponsoring free family read-aloud programs this Tuesday, September 4, and the first Tuesday of every month during the school year, at the Kailua-Kona Public Library on Hualalai Road just mauka of Ali’i Drive.   Families are encouraged to come with keiki from kindergarten age up through 18.  There will be separate read-aloud groups for different age groups, with an experienced reader.  There will be a discussion of the material read.  After the reading, light refreshments will be served. The Hawaii County elections office and Primary Day issues have been a hot topic for newspapers, online news sites, and  radio and television stations statewide.  Writing in Friday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser, political commentator Richard Borreca suggested the snafus in Hawaii County have created a movement to seriously  look at changing the way we vote. Political observer Richard Borreca, writing in Tuesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser, says both Ed Case and Mufi Hannemann, big losers in Saturday’s Primary Election, should have taken a look at past losses before deciding to run again. Begay Named GM of KLEI TV

Chip Begay has been named General Manager of the new KLEI TV, a locally-based television station in Kailua-Kona.   KLEI is broadcasting on Channel 6 over Oceanic Cablevision and as Digital TV Channel 25.   Begay comes to the job from being Operations Manager at Mahalo Broadcasting, the owner of radio stations LAVA 105.3 fm, KKOA 107.7 fm, and KHNU 620 AM.  Begay started the stations in early 2004 with then-owner Tom Troland and stayed with them when Troland sold the stations to Mahalo Broadcasting in 2008.   Prior to that, Begay worked in radio on the…

“Subjective Expressions” Young Hawaii Filmmaker Producing Local Film

“Subjective Expressions” is a low-budget, independent film currently being shot in Hawaii by 18-year-old Hamakua Coast filmmaker Dominik Walczuk. The film revolves around a character named “Pan,” a wandering female vagabond, who meets up with a character named “Feliks.” Feliks collects trash and uses it to make puppets and masks, therefore making something beautiful out of old, unwanted items. A shared artistic interest between Fliks and Pan sparks a connection, and they develop a teacher-student relationship. Big Island Foods TV paid a visit to Coastview Aquaponics in North Kona to find out what Aquaponics is all about. Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture (growing fish) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil). In aquaponics, the nutrient-rich water that results from raising fish provides a natural, organic fertilizer for the growing plants. The Kona Music Society Youth Chorus treated audience members to a concert filled with songs celebrating movies and musicals at the Hualalai Academy Bridge Building on May 7th. Songs included selections from “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Lion King,” and “Annie Get Your Gun,” with several of the chorus members featured in solos. Proceeds from this concert will be used to provide scholarship opportunities for the youth members. Watch out in the roller rink- the girls are taking over! The Kona Tsunami Slammers recently held an exhibition roller derby at the Old A roller rink to introduce roller derby to those who want to learn more about the sport. Roller derby was hugely popular in Hawai’i during the 50s and 60s, before fizzling out in the 70s. Internationally, roller derby has spread like wildfire since its 2002 revival in Austin, TX.   Ke Kula ‘o ‘Ehunuikaimalino celebrated May Day with its annual “La Mei” celebration on May 4.  Po’okumu Tim Lino addressed the crowd, welcoming the visitors to enjoy in the day’s performance. He talked about the uniqueness of Hawai’i in that it holds a “ho’olaule’a,” or celebration, every year around this time to celebrate May Day. Kailua-Kona resident Ku’ulika Tavares, 24, will appear on Friday’s airing of “Let’s Make a Deal.”   Tavares taped the show during a September visit to Los Angeles.  On “Let’s Make a Deal,” the hopeful contestants are in the audience, and often it’s the costume they select that determines whether they’ll get selected.  Tavares wore a “touristy” hula costume.  Producers also select contestants based on enthusiasm and energy.
