The State and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs will have community meetings around the state this week and next to review the settlement proposal over disputed ceded-lands claims. The meetings are intended to inform the beneficiaries about the Kaka’ako land settlement proposal announced last November.
Under the agreement, the state and OHA would agree that $200 million represents a reasonable compromise to settle disputed claims. To satisfy the $200 million, the state would convey contiguous and adjacent parcels in Kaka’ako Makai on Oahu, near Waterfront Park, including Fisherman’s Wharf. The land would continue to remain under the authority of the Hawaii Community Development Authority under its rules and zoning. However, the settlement proposal requires public meetings and it requires approval by the State Legislature.
There will be two meetings on Hawaii Island:
• Kailua-Kona at West Hawaii Civic Center, Friday, February 10, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
• Hilo at Department of Educatin Annex, 450 Wainuenue Avenue, Building C, 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The meetings will continue on other islands through February 15. For the complete schedule and more information on the settlement proposal, go online, www.oha.org/kakaako
