There are three opportunities for Hawaii Island residents to hear some top quality performers presenting classical music at private homes this weekend, with two different pairs of performers.
The Hawai’i Performing Arts Festival is brinnging in soprano Rachel Schultz and pianist Jon Korth from University of Hawaii at Manoa, plus violinist Iggy Jang. Jang is also the concertmaster of the newly-formed Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.
The Hawaii Performing Arts Festival events, two of them, are intimate afternoons of exquisite chamber music by Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Piazzolla, and great American standards. Both events include wine and pupu. The first is Saturday, April 28 at 2 p.m. at the Kohala Ranch home of Andy Czajkowski. The second is Sunday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at the South Kona home of Carol and Bob Brown. Information and tickets for the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival concerts are available online at www.hawaiiperformingartsfestival.org or call 333-7378.
There is also a performance to benefit the Kona Hospital Foundation featuring singers Chelsea Basler from the Boston Lyric Opera and baritone Brian Major. They’ll perform arias, duets, and popular tunes.
Ms. Basler won first place in the 2011 Peter Elvins Vocal Competition. She was a 2011 winner of the Kahn Career Entry Award at Boston University. She was selected as finalist in the Charles Lyman Vocal Competition in 2007. Last opera season, Major made debuts at the Chesapeake River Concert Series, St. Mary’s City, Md., and the Alba Music Festival, Alba, Italy. Major was a Gerdine Young artist at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, where he covered Marcello in Puccini’s “La Bohème” and performed first Nazarene in Strauss’ “Salome.”
The performance is Saturday evening, April 28 at a private oceanfront estate in Kona. The wine and pupu reception by Paradise Gourmet Catering begins at 6 p.m., with the concert from 7:15 to 8:45. All proceeds benefit the Kona Hospital Foundation, which provides funding for “extras” for Kona Community Hospital. Reservations may be made at the Kona Hospital Foundation office, 322-4587.
