A small earthquake on the slopes of Mauna Loa was felt by several residents Sunday morning, November 20, around 10:17 a.m. The United States Geological Survey’s “Felt Earthquakes in Hawaii” web site indicates the quake was 5 miles north of the summit of Mauna Loa, 7.4 miles deep, mauka of Captain Cook and was rated as a 3.9 magnitude quake. It was around 25 miles from Kailua-Kona, 16 miles from Pohakuloa, and 19 miles from the summit of Hualalai.
Some residents felt the quake, some reported hearing it as a loud shock.
There was a smaller 3.0 magnitude earthquake Sunday morning around 4:42 a.m. around 10 miles southeast of the Mauna Loa summit.
