The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a wind advisory for Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above elevations of 8,000 feet until 6 p.m. Sunday, today, June 17. A high wind watch will then be in effect from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon.
The advisory means winds should be East winds in the 30- to 50-mile an hour winds, with gusts to 65 miles per hour.
Strong winds can make driving to the summits especially dangerous, and motorists are urged to use caution.
A high pressure system north of the islands is causing the strong winds. There are also warnings for boaters in the channels around Hawaii Island.
