Hawaii County Fire Department supplements its full-time, paid fire teams with more than 200 volunteers islandwide. Fire Chief Rosario says the volunteers are trained just as the full-time firefighters are. One of the only things they are not allowed to do is go into burning buildings because they’re not trained on using the breathing apparatus, but otherwise serve in a similar capacity to the other fire crews on Hawaii Island. Chief Rosario says the volunteers are an important part of the fire team.
The Hawaii Volunteer Fire Company 7 is also scheduled to take part in today’s Independence Day Parade through Kailua Village, from the Kona Gym and Pool to Walua Road past Coconut Grove Marketplace, starting at 5:30 p.m.
