Firefighters On Scene at Ka’u Fire Saturday Morning

Hawaii County Firefighters remain at the scene of an unexplained fire that was called in around 10:30 Friday morning.   The fire was in a ravine between two macadamia nut orchards owned by the Maunaloa Macadamia Nut Company, off Highway 11 near lower Moaula Road. The terrain is uneven and challenging, and firefighters attempted to fight the fire in the ravine in 25 mile-an-hour winds.  They then pulled back to Highway 11 with a focus on keeping the fire from crossing the highway.

Firefighters will stay at Highway 11 to keep the fire from spreading.  Chopper 1 did water drops yesterday.  So far, the Fire Department estimates around 60 acres have burned.
