UH Hilo Vulcans Head Coach Joey Estrella announced that Fred Parker will become part of the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball staff.  Parker used to be part of the coaching staff 22 years ago.

“Fred was a very valuable asset for us during his first tenure as our hitting and outfield coach,” said Estrella. “He and I also have similar philosophical ideas on the academic and athletic development of student/athletes.  “When I discovered he retired, I did a lot of extra recruiting to bring him back to our program.”

While not teaching classes at UH Hilo from 1989 through 1990, Parker was in the Vulcans’ dugout. Opportunity as an assistant professor of education took Parker to Southeastern Louisiana University in 1990. Three years later, he accepted a tenured professor of education position at Henderson State University (AS) from which he retired in 2010.  In 1998, he was selected by HSU to develop of a women’s softball program including overseeing construction of facilities, purchases and recruiting. He resigned after the 2001 season to return to teaching.

In all, Parker has over 50 years of participation in baseball from Little League through Semi-professional baseball including high school and college. He also umpired both high school and NCAA Division I games for 10 years.
