January 3, 2012

The National Weather Service has posted high surf warnings for north, west, and east facing shores of Hawaii Island through Thursday morning at 6 a.m.  Surf heights should come up dramatically Tuesday afternoon and night, with a peak Wednesday afternoon.  The Weather Service says surf heights should be 15 to 25 feet along north facing shores and 8 to 12 feet along west and east facing shores.

Oceanside residents and beachgoers are advised to exercise caution.  Boat owners are advised to secure their vessels.

John Drummond, Acting Civil Defense Administrator, says as of Tuesday morning, beaches should probably not be closed Tuesday but County Parks and Recreation and Civil Defense will evaluate the situation Wednesday morning.
