Ironman Triathlon World Championship is set for Saturday, October 13. Many athletes are here now getting ready, and activities begin in earnest this week. Athletes are on the road training, both biking and running, and swimming in Kailua Bay. The driving public is especially warned to be careful, even though both athletes and the driver have an obligation to share the road.
More than 5,000 volunteers will be involved in supporting the event and the athletes.
The complete schedule from the athlete guide is below, but some highlights for the public include:
Tuesday, October 9, 4 p.m. the Keiki Dip-n-Dash at Kailua Pier, followed by the 5 p.m. Parade of Nations from Kailua Pier to Hale Halawai
Thursday, October 11, 8 a.m., in front of Pacific Vibrations across from Hulihe’e Palace, the Underpants Run (note, this is NOT an official Ironman event–just a fun event that raises funds for Visitor Aloha Society Hawaii and Ahuena Heiau with the participants’ $20 donation; go to Pacific Vibrations this week to sign up)
Saturday, October 13, 6:30 a.m….race starts in Kailua Bay with male pros, then female pros. The age groupers, the amateurs, start at 7 a.m. The 2.4 mile swim, then the 112-mile bike ride, then the 26.2 mile marathon will have roads closed up to Hawi. The race officially ends at midnight.
