Lucky 24 Big Island Residents Get Into Ironman Championship

A lucky 24 Hawaii Island residents will be able to take part in the Ironman Triathlon World Championship this October 13 courtesy of their luck in having their names drawn in the lottery set up by Ironman for Big Island residents only.  Fifty had signed up.  Everybody who was selected had successfully completed the Ironman Honu 70.3 Triathlon, a half Ironman distance race (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run) on June 2.

The names were drawn by Ironman’s accounting firm at their headquarters,  and announced Saturday at Bike Works in Kailua-Kona.

Those who were selected in the lottery and their city as listed by Ironman Honu:

Mathew Adams, Waikoloa

Matthew Bergey, Kailua-Kona

Michael Brown, Kailua-Kona

Chris Chang, Kailua-Kona

David Estess, Kailua-Kona

Bill Greineisen, Volcano

Michael Hamilton, Keauhou

Cassidy Landes, Kailua-Kona

Tiffany Lindsey, Kamuela

Chris Morrison, Captain Cook

Susan Nixon, Kamuela

Yanis Nora, Keauhou

Garrett Oka, Kailua-Kona

Andrew Penny, Kailua-Kona

Brandon Perea, Hilo

Korey Pulluaim, Kailua-Kona

Ricci Racela, Kamuela

Mark Ravagelia, Kamuela

Syria Ravaglia, Kamuela

Bryan Sawaya, Kailua-Kona

John Simmerman, Kamuela

Kawika Singson, Kailua-Kona

Tim Wiley, Kailua-Kona

Jeremy Withrow, Kailua-Kona

The procedure for selecting the winners of the Ironman Championship slots designated for Big Island residents used to be based on finishing at the top of the age group or category, but the Honu race switched to a lottery open to anybody who completes the race.  That created some controversy and the Ironman staff members say that’s why they do the drawing out of state, via an accounting firm, rather than doing it at Honu Headquarters in Kailua-Kona–they wanted to ensure a completely objective and fair selection and remove any doubts about the fairness of the process.

Anybody interested in being in the lottery had to submit documents back in April with proof of residency.

The lottery winners now have slots (upon payment of their fees) in the Saturday, October 13, 2012 Ironman Triathlon World Championship.  They will take part in the full Ironman event, which includes a 2.4 mile swim in Kailua Bay, a 112-mile bikeride to Hawi and back, and a 26.2 mile marathon.
