Hawaii County Fire and Rescue Teams responded Tuesday night around 9:50 p.m. to reports of a man who had fallen from the Pukihae Bridge in Hilo, just north of Hilo town on Highway 19 near the 3 mile marker.
They found a 24-year-old man lying on the bank of the Pukihae Stream. He was awake and responsive. He had apparently fallen 30 feet from the bridge to the stream.
Hawaii Fire Department personnel place the man in full spinal precaution equipment and carried him on a litter back to the road. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. During the rescue, one lane of the highway was closed.
