Mountain View area residents are invited to attend a Community Meeting on Thursday, October 18, 6:00 pm at the Mountain View Elementary School Cafeteria. The meeting will be to talk abut a community-based Village Community Center Plan.
The Puna Community Development Plan was developed by hundreds of Puna residents working thousands of hours to bring together the diverse constituencies of the district to forge guidelines for smart growth and creating community in Puna. Community Development plans all over the island are creating community-based programs, with citizens guiding the growth of their own communities. Mountain View residents hope to do this on a village scale and design a Village Community Center Plan that will help guide Mountain View as it grows.
Residents of Mountain View and the surrounding Upper Puna subdivisions will be gathering in October at the Mountain View Elementary School Cafeteria to begin to create a Village Community Center Plan. This process, recommended by the Puna Community Development Plan, entails the members of the community coming together to decide how plan for smart growth, to best serve the members of the community and to preserve its culture and history. The end result will be a Village Community Center Plan for Mountain View that can be submitted to the County.
The 2010 Census showed that the Mountain View area includes the three East Hawaii subdivisions with the highest rate of growth: Eden Roc, Fern Acres and Fern Forest. Residents are feeling the impact of this increase with more traffic congestion, inadequate community facilities and an over-subscribed Post Office. Commercial services in the Mountain View area have not kept pace with the population increase. Community members will discuss ways to increase merchant outlets without causing traffic hazards. We will also discuss ways that we can create a village that offers employment to local families, a future for our keiki and how to do this while preserving the character of the village.
Central to Mountain View Planning is the new playground being planned for the Mountain View Gym and Recreation Center. The Mountain View Senior Center is seeking to upgrade and expand its facilities. These expanded services are long needed and will bring more ohana activities to the village.
