The University of Hawaii Board of Regents announced that Noreen Yamane has been named the Chancellor for Hawaii Community College. She has been working as the Interim Chancellor since Rockne Freitas moved from the position last July to take another position with University of Hawaii. Four candidates competed for the job. Yamane was the only one from Hilo; all others were from the mainland.
Before serving as interim chancellor, Yamane worked as interim vice chancellor for academic affairs, where she chaired the College Effectiveness Review Committee, overseeing the integration of comprehensive program reviews, budget development, strategic planning and assessment.
Yamane was also formerly the dean of instruction/assistant to the vice chancellor for academic affairs where she led the update and revision of Hawaii CC’s Strategic Plan. Yamane attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo and completed her bachelor of education degree at UH-Manoa, returning for her master of education degree after teaching in state Department of Education intermediate schools and adult continuing education programs.
Yamane’s permanent appointment is effective July 1.
