The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s North Hawai?i Education and Research Center (NHERC) in Honoka`a has opened registration for its Fall 2012 Lifelong Learning program.

Back by popular demand are both the Basic and Advanced Grant Writing classes being held in East Hawai’i. The Basic class begins later this month and will cover the grant writing process from how to write a compelling statement of need to what funders look for in proposals. The Advanced class in September will teach students how to fine-tune their grant writing skills to gain an edge on the competition. The classes will be taught by Jeani Navarro who has over 30 years of grant writing experience.

Ku Mei Kern, who is nationally certified through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), will conduct a one-day “Introduction to American Sign Language and Deaf Culture” workshop in September where participants will learn about deaf culture and basic signs. The workshop will be followed in October by Kern’s four-week “Basic American Sign Language” course, which will teach students about ASL grammar, spatial setting and vocabulary.

Former Kona Community School for Adults instructor Marc Boucher will teach a series of computer classes for beginners. Instruction begins in September with a three-week class in “Basic Computers” followed by “Intro to Word” and “Intro to Excel.”

October will feature a pair of courses taught in collaboration with the NHERC Heritage Center. Romel Dela Cruz, who was born in the Philippines and came to Paauilo as a young boy, will conduct a six-week workshop entitled “Filipino Culture & Language,” covering topics such as common phrases from the four major languages (Ilocano, Tagalog, Visayan, and Cebuan), food demonstrations, and the history of Filipinos in Hawai‘i.

“Preserving Your Old Photographs” will be taught by Heritage Center Coordinator Dr. Momi Naughton and assistant Gail Chanley. Topics include scanning and documenting photos, selecting a glue, organizing photos, caring for old photos, and separating photos. Chanley will also conduct a session on restoring old photos.

Participants are encouraged to bring an old photo for restoration and will receive a printout of the restored photo as part of their class tuition.

Advanced registration is required and space is limited. For class details, visit http://hilo.hawaii.edu/academics/nherc/NHERCNon-Credit.php. To register or for  more information, call NHERC at 775-8890 or email vickyann@hawaii.edu
