From Hawaii Police Department: Police released the suspect arrested on Tuesday (September 20) in connection with a reported attempted kidnapping and attempted sexual assault on that day. Samson Perez, also known as Samson Kahumoku was released from police custody after detectives conferred with county prosecutors. On Tuesday, police received a report of a female child being in a confrontation with an adult male within a restroom on the campus of a public school in Hilo. Kealakekua Man Dies from Car/Pedestrian Crash

From Hawaii Police Department: An 84-year-old Kealakekua man died Wednesday, September 21, from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/pedestrian crash which occurred on Wednesday, September 14, on Hawai?i Belt Road (Route 11) south of the 112-mile marker in Kealakekua. The victim was identified as Greg Rosario Gregorio, of a Kealakekua address. Honolulu lawyer John Carroll is running for U.S. Senate. Carroll is vying to win the Republican nomination for the seat being vacated by U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, who is retiring.  Carroll said in a statement Wednesday he has the experience needed to do the job. He says he shares conservative values with many of Hawaii’s people. Ledward Kaapana Receives National Arts Award

Senator Daniel Akaka and Congresswoman Mazie Hirono have honored Ledward Kaapana, who has received the 2011 National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship Award.  The award was presented in a ceremony at the U. S. Capitol Wednesday, September 21. County Council Rejects Impact Fees

Hawaii County Council voted on Wednesday to deny a proposal to establish impact fees for county building projects.  The bill was introduced by Councilman Pete Hoffman (Waimea) to require payment of designated fees to help mitigate the cost of new construction and pay for roads, water systems, solid waste and wastewater facilities, and parks.  Voting against the proposal were County Council Chair Dominic Yagong (Hamakua), Angel Pilago of North Kona,  and Hilo Council members J Yoshimoto, Dennis Fresh Onishi and Donald Ikeda.  Those voting against said it would damage the economy. Kilauea Volcano Lava May Reach Royal Gardens, Again

Kilauea Crater’s lava is on  the move again.  On the west side of the crater Wednesday morning, lava inflated and overflowed from Pu’u O’o vent before stalling again.    But lava also broke through Pu’u ‘O’o's upper east flank and a flow ran downslope towards Royal Gardens Subdivision.   That’s the subdivision that has been most in the news as Kilauea’s lava has destroyed homes in the current eruption, which began in 1983.  Homes were destroyed that year and many times since.  There is one resident still living in Royal Gardens Subdivision. Lai Opua Gets Dryland Forest Grant

The Cooke Foundation is providing a $12,000 grant for dryland restoration at the Villages of Lai Opua above Kealakehe High School. The Hawaii Forest Institute, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and community groups are working to protect the fragile, endangered dryland ecosystem. The Villages at Lai Opua is a housing development which DHHL intends to use the project as a sustainable model for future projects.   Home construction and site work is designed to be sustainable, and preservation of the dryland forest is one of the stated goals. State Reapportionment Commission Agrees to Exclude Some Military, Students

The State Reapportionment Commission voted Monday 5 to 3 to exclude around 16,000 non-resident military and students from the state’s population base for purposes of reapportionment.   This is likely in direct response to impassioned testimony at Hawaii Island public hearings September 13 and 14.  Hilo attorney Stan Roehrig said the State Constitution is very specific in Article IV, Section 4 that non-residents be excluded.  Roehrig said the Constitution was amended in 1992 because of the large and transient number of military passing through the State. Live Japanese Grenade Found Near Hapuna

Unexploded ordnance technicians scanning Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area on Tuesday found a live Japanese hand grenade.  It was in the same area where a Japanese 57 mm mortar was found on September 15, north of the a bin area and southeast of the Hapuna Prince Hotel. The grenade was on the ground and in the open.  Workers moved it to the vicinity of where they detonated the Japanese mortar last week.  It was safely detonated Tuesday at 1:41 p.m.  No evacuation nor park closure was required as the nearest public access road is around…

Big Island police have arrested   Samson Moses Kahumoku, also known as Samson Perez, 35, of Pahoa,  for the attempted kidnapping and attempted sexual assault of a female child in a restroom at Hilo Union Elementary School  this morning (September 20). The child managed to escape from the suspect, who was  seen on Kapiolani Street heading in the direction of Haili Street around 6:30 a.m.  The child alerted school officials who immediately called police.  Police Captain Randall Medeiros said police enlisted all available personnel to search for the suspect.  Kahumoku has been arrested around 25 times before…
