Police Warn of Mail Thefts in Puna

  Since last month, someone has been prying open mailboxes and removing mail in rural Puna subdivisions, Big Island police said. Police ask the public to check their mailboxes for damage and report any suspicious activity. It is a federal crime to remove or tamper with another person’s mail. Anyone with information is asked to call the Keaau Police Station at 966-5835, or the Police Department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.

County Council Delays Plastic Bag Vote

The Hawaii County Council delayed until November a vote on a bill that would ban plastic bags at retailers after three members called for a public hearing on the issue. The council had been expected to vote Wednesday. But Hilo Councilmen J Yoshimoto, Dennis Onishi, and Donald Ikeda called for  public hearings once it became clear they didn’t have the five votes required to defeat the measure. Public Works Announces Hamakua Road Closure

The access to Ho‘okahua Road and Ka‘apahu Homestead Road from Kalaniai Road in H?m?kua will close Monday, March 7 to Monday, March 21 in preparation for paving the new section of the 3,800-foot long two-lane K?l?pa Sand Gulch Bypass Road. Residents are asked use Pohakea Road to access the Hawaii Belt Highway. Senate OK’s Board of Education Bill; Governor to Sign

Governor Neil Abercrombie will sign Senate Bill 8 on Monday, March 14.  That’s the bill which establishes the process by which the Governor may appoint the State Board of Education.  In November, voters approved a measuring allowing the Governor the right to appoint the Board, but the State legislature had to decide the process. The board will consist of nine members:  three from Oahu, three at large, and one each from Hawaii Island, Maui and Kaua’i.  Governor Abercrombie will also select the chairperson.    The Board of Education members oversee the State Department of Education.  The…

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has announced a fishing season closure for Deep 7 bottomfish species in State marine waters, effective March 12 through August 31, 2011.  Deep 7 bottomfish species include onaga, opakapaka, ehu, kalekale, gindai, lehi and hapu‘upu‘u. During the closed season, commercial and non-commercial fishing for Deep 7 bottomfish species is prohibited in State marine waters.  The possession and sale, including the sales by dealers, of any Deep 7 bottomfish is also prohibited during the closed season. Makalapua Shopping Center Road Remains Closed

  Hawaii County Public Works says Kamakaeha Street in North Kona, the road that runs just makai of Makalapua Shopping Center, will remain closed until around March 17.  The road was initially slated to reopen March 7.    Motorists who need to get to Makalapua Center must use Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway to Makala Boulevard.  The road remains closed as part of the offsite improvements to the Ane Keohokalole Highway, also known as the mid-level road.

On the morning of March 3, 2011, while working on a tip received from the public, Puna patrol officers arrested 35-year-old Aaron Nobriga who was being sought for several felony offenses and an outstanding warrant of arrest. Nobriga had recently been featured on Hawaii Island’s Most Wanted. The information and tips that were provided were quite instrumental and led to his apprehension. The update as of March 2:  (original story below) Detectives have charged a 25 year-old Puna man who was wanted in connection with an assault that occurred in the Puna District. On March 2, 2011 at 10:20 am, Keola Lance Kahele Bergau turned himself in at the South Hilo District station after he learned he was wanted in connection to this investigation. Malachi Kobayashi, a senior at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, has been selected as a 2011 Horatio Alger National Scholar.  Kobayashi is one of 104 high school seniors–and the only student from Hawaii–to receive the national award from the Horatio Alger Association.  Each student will receive a $20,000 scholarship to a four-year school of his or her choice and will be honored at the Horatio Alger Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. Governor Neil Abercrombie has appointed Loretta Fuddy as the Director of the Department of Health.  Ms. Fuddy has been serving as Acting Health Director since January 26, 2011, when Abercrombie’s initial appointee, Neal Palafox, stepped down at the Governor’s request. Police Focusing on Residential Speeders

Hawaii Police Department Captain Sam Kawamoto confirmed Wednesday that the department is focusing on curbing speeding in residential areas, especially on the West side of the island.  Kawamoto said in the most recent Kona talk story with the police, residents complained about neighborhood speeders.  Police will be focusing on all residential areas, with an emphasis on Lako Street, Nani Kailua, the Palisades Area, Palani Road, and Ali’i Drive.

Senator Daniel J. Akaka announced Wednesday he will not seek reelection.  His seat is up for re-election in November, 2012.  Senator Akaka has held the  second Hawaii Congressional seat for 22 years.  Prior to that, he served in the United States House of Representatives for 13 years.  He is 86 years old. Senator Daniel K. The Hawaii County Council has confirmed all 9 of Mayor Billy Kenoi’s nominees to the Redistricting Commission.  The Commission has until December 31 to redraw County Council lines, if needed, based on the most current census information which was released last Thursday. At a Tuesday evening meeting, Council Members Dominic Yagong and Brenda Ford expressed reservations about the process, based on the Mayor’s not submitting the names until February 14, thus creating the need for a special County Council meeting to meet the County Charter-imposed deadline of March 1 for selecting the Commission.  Ford voted…

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee honored Officer Calvin Delaries as “Officer of the Month” for March on Wednesday, March 2 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.   Officer Delaries was recognized for his work with the Special Enforcement Unit.  In August, 2010, Officer Delaries was working undercover along Ali’i Drive, and witnessed a narcotics transaction near the parking lot near Ali’i Sunset Plaza and Coconut Grove Marketplace.  A suspected drug dealer appeared to sell narcotics to the occupants of a vehicle.   Officer Delaries and other members of the police force arrested the vehicle’s occupants, who…

Man Rescued at Boiling Pots

A Hawaii County Fire Department helicopter rescued a man who slipped at the top of a waterfall and couldn’t climb to safety. The man was hiking up the waterfall in the area of Boiling Pots about 2 p.m. Tueday when he slipped and fell onto rocks, possibly injuring his head and legs, firefighters said. A fire helicopter used a 150-foot rope to lift the man to the parking lot where paramedics took over care. The man went to Hilo Medical Center in serious condition.
