UH Sponsors E Waste Disposal in Hilo and Kona

The University of Hawaii will offer free recycling of electronic waste from October 25 to October 27.  Residents may recycle old televisions, computers, and other electronic devices at University of Hawaii at Hilo and at Kealakehe High School from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00  p.m. each day. The County of Hawai’i held a blessing Tuesday morning, October 16, to commence $4.15 million worth of improvements to the State-owned slaughterhouse in Pa’auilo. On Thursday, October 18, 2012 the County of Hawai`i Leeward Planning Commission will consider a Special Management Area (SMA) permit application by the County Department of Public Works to the extension of La`aloa Avenue as a two-lane, 60-foot wide collector roadway for approximately 1,900 feet to connect with Kuakini Highway.   The County had considered several alternative designs.   The selected alternative calls for sidewalks and bike lanes.    Peoples Advocacy Trails Hawaii (PATH) has issued a statement saying that geographical challenges will preclude some bicyclists and pedestrians from the effective use of this extension if not…

Police and members of the County Administration will hold a second informational meeting about the recent rash of burglaries and car thefts in the Kona area and other parts of Hawai’i County. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday (October 18) at the Konawaena High School cafeteria. New Four Way Stop Coming to Hilo

Roadwork to change the Ohuohu Street and E Puainako intersection to an all way stop is near completion.  The conversion could happen Wednesday, October 17, weather permitting.   Once the change is made, motorists approaching this intersection will be required to stop.   Stop signs will be installed on E Puainako and turn lanes removed.   Whichever vehicle comes to the intersection first has the right of way.  If vehicles approach the intersection at the same time, right of way is to the vehicle on the right.

California Man Robbed Monday Night in Kona

From Hawaii County Police: Big Island police are investigating the robbery of a California man Monday night (October 15) in Kona. At 10:35 p.m., Kona patrol officers responded to a report of a robbery in the rear parking lot of Ali’i Sunset Plaza, which is located between Kuakini Highway and Ali’i Drive in Kailua-Kona. A 50-year-old Los Angeles man reported that he walked in the direction of a group of males at the rear of the plaza, where he was attacked by two of them. Police ID Puna Man Killed in Crash Last Thursday

Big Island police have identified the man who died Thursday, October 11, from a two-vehicle crash on Highway 11 in front of Hirano Store as 57-year-old John K. Isabel Jr. of Glenwood.   A van driven by a 33-year-old woman was heading towards Hilo when it slammed into Isabel’s station wagon.  The van flew in the air and flipped over, landing on its roof.   Bystanders helped extricate the woman from the vehicle.   When Hawaii County Fire Department personnel arrived she was sitting near the van.  They transported her to Hilo Medical Center with chest,…
