Pacific Business News out of Honolulu reported on Friday, July 22, that Pier 1 Imports will open its first store on Hawaii Island in Kona in early 2012. They say the company recently signed a lease at the Kona Coast Shopping Center on Palani Road, to occupy the former Ross Dress for Less location. Pier 1 Imports carries furniture, accessories, home decor, and more.
Pier 1 Imports currently has stores in Kahului, Maui; and on Oahu, in Kailua, Pearl City, and Honolulu. This would be the fifth Hawaii location.
Pier 1 Imports started as a single store in San Mateo, California in 1962. Their first customers were post-World War II baby boomers looking for beanbag chairs, love beads and incense. Their corporate headquarters moved to Forth Worth, Texas in 1966. They now have more than 1,000 stores.
In 1970, Pier 1 went public and became listed on the American Stock Exchange. They joined the New York Stock Exchange in 1972.
Pier 1 is known for its wide range of eclectic products.
