Hawaii Fire Department responded to an alarm at 2:39 a.m. Saturday, April 9, indicating a one-car accident in front of 73-1071 Ahulani Street in the Palisades area of Kailua-Kona. They found an SUV type vehicle which had apparently rolled over, with one female driver, 18, trapped in the vehicle with no signs of life. Hawaii Fire Department used auto extrication tools to remove the driver’s side door and extricate the driver. Chernell Kaili was pronounced dead at the hospital.
There were three other occupants who had gotten out of the vehicle. One 15-year-old front seat passenger complained of chest pain, and a 21 year-old right side rear passenger complaining of right flank pain. Both were transported to Kona Hospital in stable condition. A 19-year-old left side rear passenger was uncooperative and combative. He was restrained and transported to Kona Hospital Emergency Room by Hawaii Police.
The accident and its cause is under investigation. Police believe both speed and alcohol were factors in the accident. Kaili is the seventh traffic fatality on Hawaii Island roads this year. At this time last year, there had been eight fatalities.
