Fired Election Workers Filing Suit

Hilo Attorney Ted Hong says fired election workers Patricia Nakamoto and Glenn Shikuma will file a lawsuit against the County of Hawaii for wrongful termination.   Nakamoto and Shikuma are each claiming damages in the amount of $500,000, based on what they say is the County Clerk’s false and defamatory statements made about them as the basis for firing them, the infliction of emotional distress, and the unconstitutional withholding of their personal property. Police Release Hilo Sexual Assault Suspect

From Hawaii Police Department: Police released the suspect arrested on Tuesday (September 20) in connection with a reported attempted kidnapping and attempted sexual assault on that day. Samson Perez, also known as Samson Kahumoku was released from police custody after detectives conferred with county prosecutors. On Tuesday, police received a report of a female child being in a confrontation with an adult male within a restroom on the campus of a public school in Hilo. County Redistricting Commission Meetings Start This Week

Just as the State has a Reapportionment Commission to redraw the State House and State Senate lines based on the most current census, Mayor Kenoi has appointed a County Redistricting Commission to redraw the lines for the nine Hawaii County Council districts–based on the most current census.  They will hold public hearings to review their proposals and take public input starting this Friday.  The schedule of public hearings and regular meetings is below. County Council Wants Input on Plastic Bag Reduction Bill

Hawaii County Council is considering an ordinance to reduce the use of plastic bags offered by merchants around the island at checkout.  They will have hearings islandwide starting Tuesday. Councilman Pete Hoffman has introduced the bill.  Hoffman says the bill  intends to proactively address the environmental harm resulting from the proliferation of plastic bags.  In the past, directors of the County’s Department of Environmental Management have said plastic bags are a huge problem in the landfill as they blow all over and the County then spends time and money sending people to corral them. Hoffman Urges Property Tax Structure Review

Hawaii County Councilman Pete Hoffman (Waimea, Waikoloa)  says one budget amendment he wants to see approved is really a resolution, not an amendment.   He is urging Mayor Billy Kenoi to dedicate funds to hire an outside consultant to review the County’s real property tax structure.  Hoffman says he’s not suggesting a review of the actual rates, but that may be a conclusion suggested by the study. Good Friday, the Friday before Easter, is a State and County holiday but not a Federal holiday.  So most County offices, except for Police and Fire, will be closed.  Police and Fire will continue to provide their standard emergency and rescue service.   State offices will be closed.  Federal offices (post offices, banks)  will be open, but the stock market is closed.  Schools will be closed, so any bank branches at the University of Hawaii will be closed. The County of Hawai’i invites Hawai’i Island residents to attend the Family Financial Empowerment Day in Hilo on April 9th from 10am to 2pm, at the County Building in Hilo at 25 Aupuni Street.  No-cost tax preparation and one-on-one counseling services will be offered, as well as information on the food stamp program and childcare and housing assistance. Hilo Disabled Parking Office to Relocate April 4

The Disabled Parking Office currently in the County building at 25 Aupuni Street will relocate on Monday, April 4.  The new location is the former Sun Sun Lau Restaurant at 1055 Kino’ole Street, Suite 101.  The phone is 961-8005.  The office will be open from 7:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.  The office provides applications and processing for temporarya nd permanently disabled parking placards and license plates.   This new ground floor location is at the County’s one-stop Aging and Disability Resource Center.

County Council Budget Meetings Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

Monday is the first  of three days of  the Hawaii County Council’s Finance Committee reviews of both the proposed operating and capital budgets.   Mayor Billy Kenoi will testify first, Monday morning at 9 a.m., to discuss his proposed $366 million operating budget and the $177 million capital improvement project budget.  Then each of his department heads will defend his or her proposed budget before the nine-member finance committee.   Finance Committee Chair Brenda Ford says this is the Council’s first opportunity to scrutinize each department’s plans in detail. Hawaii Island Attorney Suspended

The Hawaii State Supreme Court has suspended Hilo-based attorney Carrie Yonemori for three years.  The court said the suspension resulted from her failure to provide competent and diligent representation to three clients, her failure to communicate with these clients, and her failure to cooperate in the investigation of these clients’ complaints.  The court, in a written statement, cautioned that Yonemori is ineligible to practice law in Hawaii until reinstated by court order.     Yomemori was born and raised in Hilo, and attended Waiakeawaena Elementary, Waiakea Intermediate, and Waiakea High School.  She graduated from UH Hilo…
