County to Reopen Waikea Uka Park Thursday–Public Invited

The County has just completed a $1 million upgrade to Hilo’s Waikea Uka Park and Stanley Costales Gymnasium.    The public is invited to join Mayor Billy Kenoi and County Parks Director Bob Fitzgerald at a blessing and dedication ceremony set for 10 a.m. Thursday, June 7 at the gym. Hawai‘i County Mayor Billy Kenoi and Department of Parks and Recreation Director Bob Fitzgerald will join the North Kohala community in celebrating the reopening of Keokea Beach Park during a public blessing and dedication ceremony set for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12.   The Friends of Keokea Beach Park will assist in welcoming the public back to the North Kohala facility. This Saturday,  Hawai‘i County’s Department of Parks and Recreation is reopening a popular Hilo park that has undergone extensive renovation.   Mayor Billy Kenoi and Parks and Recreation Director Bob Fitzgerald will join various dignitaries in welcoming people back to Reed’s Bay Beach Park during a public ceremony set for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 28. County to Close Pools for Repairs–Starting Saturday!

Hawai‘i County’s swimming pools are receiving necessary safety improvements that will result in the temporary closure of five facilities, the Hawai’i County Department of Parks and Recreation announced Friday afternoon at 4:20 p.m.  The first closure will start Saturday.   Hilo’s NAS Pool and Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium, P?hala Swimming Pool, Konawaena Pool, and the Kona Community Aquatic Center (KCAC) each will be closed for an estimated 10 days while the upgrades are being made.   The Department of Parks and Recreation is replacing all of the drain covers at each facility with newer,…

From Hawaii County Parks and Recreation: Mayor Billy Kenoi will join other dignitaries in welcoming the public back to an improved and expanded Gilbert Carvalho Park during a ceremony set for 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12.   The Hilo facility has undergone upgrades costing approximately $890,000 since it was closed for renovation Sept. 12, 2011. Kohala Center To Establish Learning Center at Kahalu’u Beach Park

The Kohala Center has entered into a 10-year contract with the County of Hawai‘i to establish a learning center—the Kahalu‘u Bay Education Center—at Kahalu‘u Beach Park. The Bay Education Center offers a unique visitor education experience—one that teaches respect and reverence for the natural and cultural resources of Kahalu‘u Bay. The Bay Education Center represents a new model of collaboration between the County and a nonprofit, The Kohala Center. Old Kona Airport Park Vandalized

Kailua Park, also known as the Old Kona Airport Park, was vandalized Monday night or Tuesday morning, according to Bob Fitzgerald, director of the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation.   Fitzgerald said the locks on gates were filled with cyanoacrylate, also known as “super glue,” concrete and human waste was mixed and poured down a number of toilets near the beach pavilions and sprinkler heads were broken off at the Friends for Fitness walking track. County Council Budget Hearings Over for Now

Hawaii County Council’s Finance Committee just finished three days of departmental budget reviews.  They started on Monday with Mayor Billy Kenoi and his finance team talking about both the proposed operating budget of $366 million and the proposed Capital Improvement Budget, of $177 million.   Then the Council members heard from each Department Head and were able to ask them questions. The proposed budget eliminates employee furloughs, in line with the State and other counties.   However, Council members suggested a way be found to continue those furloughs, for a projected savings of around $7 million per…

Tsunami Cleanup Update

In the aftermath of the March 11 tsunami, there has been a tremendous community effort to help clean up damage along the  heavily damaged areas in South and North Kona.    Individual and business volunteers, working with the county, have been instrumental in getting things closer to being back to normal. Thursday, March 17,  over 100 people showed up at Kahalu’u Beach Park to restore the ponds and repair and paint picnic tables.   The sea had flooded the park, leaving rocks and debris everywhere.   The water also undermined a small pavilion when waves crashed over the…

Listen to Mayor Kenoi’s comments about the upcoming budget: Mayor Billy Kenoi 2011 Budget Plan Mayor Billy Kenoi spoke Tuesday to more than 150 people at a combined Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce/Kona Rotary meeting.   Among other things, he spoke of the County’s success in getting federal stimulus funding for infrastructure projects.   Mayor Kenoi says Hawaii County got 38% of federal stimulus money allocated to the state for roads.   That includes $46 million dollars for the Ane Keohokalole Highway, the mid level road.  Kenoi said there is $15 million dollars more to extend the mid level…
