Corinne Quinajon Is Miss Kona Coffee 2012

Corinne Quinajon is Miss Kona Coffee 2012.   She was also named Miss Popularity.  Kayli Tower was Most Photogenic. The pageant was last Saturday night at Sheraton Keauhou,  one  of the many events of the 41st annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. Corinne won with a $1,500 scholarship and promotional tour to Japan, courtesy of Ueshima Coffee Corp. First runner up is Kapuahi’ilani Lapera, with Noelani O’Conner second runner up.

Queen Ka’ahumanu Widening Update Coming October 26

The State Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting for the Queen Kaahumanu Highway Widening project on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, 6:00 pm-7:30pm at Kealakehe High School Cafeteria. The second phase of the Queen Kaahumanu Highway Widening project consists of 5.2 miles of widening the existing two-lane highway to a four-lane divided highway from Kealakehe Parkway to the Kona International Airport. Governor Abercrombie’s Fourth Staffer Announces Resignation

Governor Neil Abercrombie is losing his Deputy Communications Director, Laurie Au.  Au is the fourth Abercrombie staffer to resign; all of those leaving were instrumental in the Governor’s election campaign or worked for him in Washington. Sources say Au is leaving because of the resignations of Chief of Staff Amy Asselbaye, Deputy Chief of Staff Andrew Aoki, and Communications Director Josh Levinson.  Au is a former reporter for the Honolulu Star Bulletin. County Public Works Cancels Plans for Lane Closures, Tree Trimming Next Week

Hawaii County Public Works announced Thursday it has changed its timing for tree trimming requiring lane closures in the Honalo and Kainaliu areas, with traffic diversions to the Hokulia/Mamalahoa Bypass Road.   Initially the announcement was made the work would be from October 3 to October 7, the week before the October 8 Ironman Triathlon World Championship.    After publicizing the closures, they subsequently announced they will postpone the closures until after Ironman. Mydock Recognized for Wailoa Art Center Exhibit

Wailoa Art & Cultural Center’s August exhibit “Hawai’i Nei 2011”, mounted in August, concluded with well over eleven hundred visitors. The Peoples Choice Award was given to John Mydock, artist and wood turner, for his koa bowl which he calls “As Above—So Below.” The exhibit featured the diversity of Hawaii Island’s native species and the artists’ interpretations of them. “Hawai’i Nei 2012” will continue its mission once again at Wailoa Arts & Cultural Center in November, 2012.   Wailoa Arts & Cultural Center wants artists, students, and teachers to have plenty of time to research, discover,…

HPA Students To Present Conflict Resolution Play

Fourth and fifth graders at Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) will present “Munchkin Mediation:  Conflict Resolution in Oz” at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 7.  The musical performance, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Gates Performing Arts Center on the school¹s Upper Campus. “Munchkin Mediation: Conflict Resolution in Oz” is presented in conjunction with the students¹ conflict resolution unit.  The play is written by John Heath and Ron Fink of Bad Wolf Press and adapted by HPA music teacher Georgia Polakova and guidance counselor Mariah Dodd.
