Canoe Clubs Lose Some, Save Some

Canoe Clubs on the West side of Hawaii Island in general managed to get their canoes out of harms way before Friday morning’s tsunami–but not always.   Kai Ehitu Canoe Club managed to remove its two new canoes and two canoe canoes from Kamakahonu Beach, behind King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel,  early Friday morning.  But they had to leave two canoes there, including one they share with Tui Tonga.  Club members just simply ran out of time before police closed off access to the area around 2 a.m. in anticipation of the tsunami. Keauhou Bay Damages Reported

Keauhou Canoe Club, which houses its canoes at Keauhou Bay, moved 14 fiberglass canoes, two koa canoes, and a trailer of one-man canoes to higher ground Thursday night.  Club Presidents Bill and Cindy Armer said around 70 paddlers armed with flashlights descended on the canoe halau on the shores of the bay Thursday from 9:45 until midnight.   The move was fortunate as the tsunami drove the water about halfway up the sloping lawn to within six feet of the halau.
