Hilo High Gets $3 Million for New Gym Upgrade

Governor Neil Abercrombie has announced the release of more than $26.8 million for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) at school facilities statewide. ?  The largest grant of $3 million is for Hilo High School, to upgrade its new gymnasium to serve as a community emergency shelter.   Hawaii Island State Representative Jerry Chang said in February that the gym was being delayed because the County had not issued building permits.  The County was requiring the Department of Education to meet new building code requirements of being able to sustain winds up to 155 miles per…

State Legislature Agrees on Budget

State legislators have now agreed on a state budget.  The operating budget will be $11.2 million.  And the Capital Improvement Budget will be $428 million. The CIP was the sticking point for agreement.  The State House wanted $300 million to go to Capital Improvements.  The State Senate wanted $500 million.  The final amount was pretty much a split of the difference. State Leg Misses Budget Deadline

State legislators, both State Senate and State House, failed to pass the State’s budget prior to a self-imposed deadline of midnight Friday night. Sources inside the Capitol said the $11.2 billion  Operating Budget has been agreed upon, but there was a stalemate between the House Finance Committee and the Senate Ways and Means Committee over the Capital Improvement Budget.  That budget is used for roads, schools, any infrastructure controlled by the state.  The Senate is pushing for a $500 million CIP, while apparently the House wants to hold the CIP at $300 million. Hawaii Island Getting More than $4.6 Million from State for Slaughterhouse, Water

Governor Neil Abercrombie today announced the release of more than $13 million for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) that invest in Hawai’i’s local agriculture industry and upgrade the state’s water irrigation infrastructure.?  This includes $4.1 million for the Pa’auillo Slaughterhouse and $500,000 for renovation of the existing water tunnel in Ka’u, along with soe projects on other islands and work affecting State irrigation systems on various islands. “The priority projects being funded will greatly support and expand agriculture in Hawai’i,” said Russell S. From County Board of Water Supply: The County of Hawai`i  Water Board, unanimously confirmed Keith Okamoto as the Deputy Manager of the Department of Water Supply at their monthly meeting Wednesday.   In a letter addressed to the Water Board, newly selected Manager – Chief Engineer Quirino Antonio detailed the many reasons for his selection of Okamoto as his Deputy.  In his letter, Antonio wrote about Okamoto’s beginning at the Department in 1996 as a licensed civil engineer in the Water Resources and Planning Branch of the Engineering Division.  In 2000, Okamoto was promoted to…

Island Projects to Get Boost from State-Funded Projects

Governor Neil Abercrombie has announced the release of more than $63.7 million for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIP)—and Hawaii Island will get a good chunk of the money.  University of Hawaii at Hilo will get $16 million for much-needed student housing and the Ka’u High/Pahala Elementary Gym will get an addition $235,000 to supplement the $17.9 million already released.  Additional funds will be allocated for affordable renting at Ke Kumu Ekolu in Waimea,  safe drinking water projects, and improvement to the infrastructure at Keaukaha Military Reservation.
