Yagong Throws Support to Kim

Hawaii County Council Chair Dominic Yagong, who recently came in a distant third in his race for Hawaii County Mayor, is endorsing former Mayor Harry Kim for the job. Yagong’s campaign, which he’s been waging for the past year, was mostly focused against the policies of incumbent Mayor Billy Kenoi.  In the election, Mayor Billy Kenoi received 18,390 votes, former Mayor Harry Kim got 14,801.  Yagong was third with 8,352.  There were three other candidates, Share Christie, Daniel Cunningham, and Rand Walls, who received just under 1100 votes. The East Hawaii Chapter of  Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster- VOAD (VOH-ADD) is having a quarterly general meeting on Tuesday, August 21, at 10 am at the Civil Defense office located at 920 Ululani Street.   VOAD  is the forum where organizations share knowledge and resources throughout the disaster cycle—preparation, response and recovery—to help disaster survivors and their communities. Members of  VOAD form a coalition of nonprofit organizations that respond to disasters as part of their overall mission. Hwy 11 in Pahala Open as of 3 p.m. and Fire Threat Is Down

Hawaii Police Department has reopened Highway 11 in Pahala to traffic in both directions as of about 3 p.m. Wednesday. Fire crews remain on the scene at both the mauka fire at Cane Haul Road and at the makai fire below Highway 11, but firefighting efforts appear to have beem successful, in combination with diminished winds and rain last night. The staff at Ka’u Hospital, working with Hilo Medical Center personnel, have prepared Ka’u Hospital for the return of the 15 long-term care patients who call the hospital home. Wednesday Morning Update:  Pahala Fire More Stable

Barry Parriatt of Hawaii County Civil Defense said on Wednesday morning at 5:15,  there was little change in the fires in Pahala, in the Ka’u District,  overnight.  The mauka portion of the fire has remained steady at around 400 acres and is around 60% contained.  There was light rain last night, and Assistant Fire Chief Glen Honda said the winds  died down–both conditions helping the firefighters. The fire makai of Highway 11 has grown to around 4,000 acres.  Chief Honda said the fire was spreading in the Hilo direction. The fire at one point jumped…

Assistant  Fire Chief Glen Honda, talking from the Hawaii County Civil Defense Headquarters, said at 8 p.m. Tuesday that the Ka’u Hospital Emergency Room has reopened, in a sign of improvement in the Pahala fire. But the makai portion of the fire is up to around 4,000 acres, up from around 3,000 acres several hours ago.  Highway 11 is still closed, and will be reopened when Hawaii County Police and Fire deem it safe to do so. Police Warn of Burglaries at Waiakea House Lots

From Hawaii Police Department: Big Island police are advising residents in the Waiakea Houselots area of Hilo that their neighborhood has experienced an increase in burglaries since May. Burglars have entered homes through windows to steal jewelry and other items. Police advise residents in the area to reduce their risk by locking all doors and windows when they leave home. Police plan to send prerecorded phone notifications to area residents using the Hawai?i County Civil Defense Agency’s automated telephone notification system to warn them about the burglaries. Civil Defense Seeks Citizen Emergency Responders

Aloha! The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency has scheduled a Community Emergency Response Team or CERT Training in Kailua-Kona for four consecutive Saturdays starting June 2 and ending June 23, 2012.   Hawaii County Civil Defense trains Community CERT teams around the island, to serve as a backup to first responders in the event of an emergency.  At the last CERT training in Kona, over 40 community members participated.   There are CERT teams at several locations around the island, and more trainings will be conducted.   The training is an in-depth emergency response course fully…

The Civil Defense monthly test of the statewide outdoor siren warning system, coordinated with the test of the live audio broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System, is scheduled for Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at 11:45 a.m.   The Siren Test is a steady one minute tone on all sirens.  The steady tone is used to alert the public to any emergency that may pose a threat to life and property.  Besides natural and technological hazards, the Emergency Alert System could be used for terrorist incidents or acts of war.   Tests of civil defense…

The last home in Kalapana’s Royal Gardens Subdivision was burned by advancing lava flows from Kilauea’s Pu’u ‘O’o Vent Friday night.  Jack Thompson had prided himself on being the last holdout, the last homeowner to refuse to give up his home…and Madame Pele spared the house up until this weekend.    The house was within the evacuation zone declared by Hawaii County Civil Defense, but Thompson would return to the house from his now-primary residence in Ainaloa, in Puna. From Hawaii County’s Office of the Mayor: Hawai’i Army National Guard Col. Benedict Fuata has been selected as the next Civil Defense Administrator for the County of Hawai’i, it was announced  by Mayor Billy Kenoi. Fuata, 50, has been the Commander of the Army Aviation Support Facility in Hilo since 1993. He is also the Guard’s director for logistics. He will transition from his previous position at the National Guard during the coming weeks. Fuata replaces Quince Mento, who retired Dec. 1. Waimea Schools Holding Evacuation Drill Wednesday

Waimea Elementary and Middle Schools will hold an Off-Campus Evacuation training drill at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, February  8,  to familiarize the two schools’ approx. 900 students and approx. 100 teachers and staff with what to do in the event of an emergency.  Because the two schools share the same campus facilities and the alarm system is interconnected, all safety drills are held simultaneously.
