Zucker to Receive County Kudos for Hunger Hike and 115,000 Pounds of Food

Will Zucker, Sales Director for Mahalo Broadcasting (parent company of LAVA 105.3 fm and KKOA 107.7 fm) will receive a Certificate of Appreciation Wednesday, December 7 at 9 a.m. from Hawaii County Council for his recent successful food drive as part of his Hike For Hunger. Zucker walked 127 miles from Hilo to Kona in November over a seven-day period starting November 5 to raise awareness of the need for island residents to help Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank, with donations of food or cash.   He collected 1,094 pounds of food and $11,394.21 in…

County Council Rejects Impact Fees

Hawaii County Council voted on Wednesday to deny a proposal to establish impact fees for county building projects.  The bill was introduced by Councilman Pete Hoffman (Waimea) to require payment of designated fees to help mitigate the cost of new construction and pay for roads, water systems, solid waste and wastewater facilities, and parks.  Voting against the proposal were County Council Chair Dominic Yagong (Hamakua), Angel Pilago of North Kona,  and Hilo Council members J Yoshimoto, Dennis Fresh Onishi and Donald Ikeda.  Those voting against said it would damage the economy. Hoffman Says “No Mayor Race”

Hawaii County Councilman Pete Hoffman from Waimea has put an end to speculation he would run for Mayor with an announcement that he will not.  Hoffman had said he was considering such a run and was conducting polls to determine how to move forward.    Hoffman said after consultation with his wife, he decided not to take that step. Other Council members who have in the past indicated they may run include Angel PIlago, from North Kona, and Council Chair Dominic Yagong, from Hamakua.  As of now, Pilago has said he’s not inclined to run.  And…

County Council Wants Input on Plastic Bag Reduction Bill

Hawaii County Council is considering an ordinance to reduce the use of plastic bags offered by merchants around the island at checkout.  They will have hearings islandwide starting Tuesday. Councilman Pete Hoffman has introduced the bill.  Hoffman says the bill  intends to proactively address the environmental harm resulting from the proliferation of plastic bags.  In the past, directors of the County’s Department of Environmental Management have said plastic bags are a huge problem in the landfill as they blow all over and the County then spends time and money sending people to corral them.
