Lyman Museum Offers Tour of Stone Structures of East Hawaii

Lyman Museum invites the public to join in a tour of the early stone structures of East Hawaii.  The architectural van tour is coming up Saturday, October 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.   The all day tour includes stops at an ancient Hawaiian fish pond, a plantation-era cemetery, an historical Portuguese distillery, and other locations of pre- and post-colonial importance.   The tour leaders are renowned historian and anthropologist Dr. Judith Kirkendall and Leslie Lang, author of Exploring Historic Hilo.   Tickets include transportation, a sandwich lunch and bottled water, and are $50…

The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawai’i recognized Officer Chere Lyons on Thursday (September 27) as “Officer of the Month” for September. Lyons, a South Hilo patrol officer, was honored for her quick arrest of a burglary suspect last month. At 7:48 a.m. on August 13, a Pepe’ekeo resident reported that a stranger was attempting to break into his neighbor’s house by removing glass jalousies. Monday Truck Driver to Stay in Jail on Other Charges

Major Sam Thomas of Hawaii Police confirmed that Alfred Berdon III, the driver of the truck who was responsible for the deaths of two women Monday and serious injuries to five others, will stay in jail.  He appeared in court Thursday morning on a separate motion to revoke his probation, which was granted.  Berdon will be in State custody.  Berdon was convicted of a DUI in August, 2012, and of a previous road rage incident in 2007 and had been on probation. From Hawaii Police Department, Tuesday morning, September 11, 8:30 a.m. A 61-year-old woman and a 54-year-old woman, both from Kea’au, died Monday (September 10) from injuries they received in a two- vehicle crash on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 19), .2 miles east of the 39-mile-marker in the Hamakua District. The victim’s were identified as Josefina B. Visaya, 61, and Patrocinia R. Cadang, 54, both of a Kea?au address. The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawai’i recognized South Hilo Patrol Officer Ryan Domingo as “Officer of the Month” for June and Puna Patrol Officer Corina Apuakehau as “Officer of the Month” for July. Both officers were honored Thursday (July 26) at a luncheon ceremony at Coqui’s Hideaway in Hilo. Domingo was honored for administering life-saving first aid to a victim of gunshot wounds. Kohala Center is sponsoring a series of tours in the next three weeks featuring 15 school and community gardens.  Kohala Center provides partial funding and support for 63 community gardens around the island.  The staff at Kohala Center says the gardens are outdoor learning labs that can enhance the lives of children and adults involved in the gardens. This week, 52 students from East Hawai‘i started spring internships with Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park’s Youth Internship Program, part of the National Park Service’s Youth Partnership Program.   One goal of the program is to train and hire 32 students to work part-time at Hawai‘i Volcanoes this summer. Some will become park rangers, others will work as cultural and natural resources staff, or join the protection team. The Spring Teen Health Camp for  students in grades 8 to 12 is Saturday, April 21, at Kealakehe High School from 9:30 until 2:30.   The event is an opportunity for students interested in careers in medicine to learn more. The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawai’i recognized Officer Erhard Autrata as “Officer of the Year” and Captain Jesse Ebersole as “Firefighter of the Year” in a dinner ceremony Thursday evening, March 15. Autrata, who joined the Police Department in 2007, is a patrol officer in the South Hilo District. Ebersole, a 20-year veteran with the Fire Department, is a recently-promoted captain assigned to the Emergency Medical Services Bureau.
