The Kona County Farm Bureau hosted a two-hour candidate forum Sunday evening at the Queen Emma Community Center behind Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua.  Candidates participating included for State Senate District 3 (Kona), the incumbent, Dr. Josh Green, and his challenger Jeff LaFrance; State House 6 (North Kona) candidates Nicole Lowen and Roy Ebert; State House 5 (South Kona) candidates, incumbent Denny Coffman and challenger Dave Bateman; and County Council candidates for District 6, South Kona to Volcano, incumbent Brenda Ford and challenger Maile David.  Around 45 people attended. Kona County Farm Bureau will host  a Candidate Forum at the Christ Church Episcopal Meeting Hall, in Kealakekua on Sunday, September 16, at 6pm.   The topic will be “All About Agriculture”. The County of Hawai‘i and the Hamakua Farm Bureau will meet to bless the Kapulena Agricultural Park today at 10 a.m. at the lands just northwest of Honoka‘a.   Cattle have been grazing the Kapulena lands since the beginning of 2012 in an effort to clear thick vegetation off the first increment of the fallow sugar cane lands.  Once the lands are grazed down, they will be made available for more intensive farming projects proposed by the community.   “Kapulena is an opportunity for the hard-working farmers and ranchers of H?m?kua to work the land,”…

Mayor Invites Community to Talk Story Sessions

In an effort to bring government to the people, Mayor Kenoi and the directors of County departments will be at public meetings at different locations around the island for Community Talk Story events scheduled throughout the month of March. Deadline Friday for West Side Farmers Signup for Skills Conference

University of Hawaii’s Community Colleges, the State, and the Hawaii Farm Bureau are lead sponsors of a forum on Tuesday, March 6, at Kona’s King Kamehameha Beach Hotel to  address workforce and job skill issues that are impeding West Hawaii’s agriculture industry.   Farmers are invited to participate at no cost, but the deadline to sign up is Friday morning. James Hardway with the State Department of Labor  says the state wants to help provide trained workers for key industries.  It has already held similar conferences on O’ahu for the healthcare and software industries.
