The world-famous Harlem Globetrotters will be in Hilo on Sunday.  They’ll play an exhibition game at the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium at 2 p.m.  Tickets for the event are available at all KTA Superstores (with a $5 donation tacked on to the Boys and Girls Clubs). IRS Seeking Advisors from Hawai’i

The Internal Revenue Service seeks civic-minded volunteers from Hawaii to serve on the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel (TAP), a federal advisory committee that listens to taxpayers, identifies key issues, and makes recommendations for improving IRS service. “TAP members give the IRS insights from every corner of our nation, helping the agency in its continuous effort to improve tax administration,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. More than 150 students from Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Kealakehe Intermediate School, and Waikoloa School will perform in the Nineteenth Annual Ukulele Festival at Hawaii Preparatory Academy at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 10.  The festival, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Gates Performing Arts Center, located at HPA’s Upper Campus.   The students are directed by Georgia Polakova, Dagan Bernstein, and Lynn Kakugawa (HPA); Gloria Juan Tapa’atoutai (Kealakehe), and Lani Opunui (Waikoloa).   This year’s festival will feature music and dance from the wonderful world of Disney, going back…

The top three World Golf Amateurs highlight this year’s field at the 22nd Annual Amer Ari at the Waikoloa Beach Resort, through Friday,  February 3, on the Waikoloa Kings’ Course. UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay, Texas’ Jordan Spieth and Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers, ranked 1-3, will be leading their respective schools in the 20-team competition.   The tournament field includes eight of the top 14 NCAA Division I teams. Meth Project Is Working

Cindy Adams, Director of the Hawaii Meth Project, shared results from the 2011 Hawaii Meth Uses and Attitudes Survey on Thursday.  The statewide survey found that compared to a 2009 benchmark survey conducted before the launch of the Hawaii Meth Project, Hawaii’s young people are increasingly aware of the dangers of using crystal methamphetamines (meth), are more likely to disapprove of taking the drug even once or twice, and report the Hawaii Meth Project ads make them less likely to try or use meth. Federal Education Checking Hawaii Race to the Top

A team of leaders from the U.S. Department of Education’s Implementation and Support Unit (ISU) traveled to Honolulu yesterday for a two-day on-site program review with representatives from Hawaii’s Race to the Top team. The state team is executing Hawaii’s nearly $75 million Race to the Top grant, awarded by the Department in August 2010 to support the state’s comprehensive education reform plan to enhance and elevate student achievement. Five members of the University of Hawai`i at Hilo chapter of Phi Alpha Theta (The National History Honor Society) participated in the organization’s 27th annual regional conference held March 12th at UH Manoa and walked away with multiple honors, including two “Best Paper” awards. The Regents Candidate Advisory Council has presented Governor Neil Abercrombie with a list of candidates for four seats on the University of Hawaii Board of Regents.   The affairs of the university fall under the general management and control of the regents. Local Girl Wins National Punt, Pass & Kick

Kealakekua 7-year-old Jayla Medeiros has won the NFL Punt Pass & Kick National Competition in the age 6 to 7 division (see video).  The contest was Saturday at the Atlanta Georgia Dome.  Jayla is on the Kona Marlins’ Mitey Mite Division team in Pop Warner flag football and tackle football. All participants had one punt, one pass, and one kick.  The winners in each age group were determined by distance and accuracy.  Another Hawaii Island girl, Gabrielle Ewing, competed in the Girls 12-13 group and finished fourth.
