Akaka Will Not Seek Re-election

Senator Daniel J. Akaka announced Wednesday he will not seek reelection.  His seat is up for re-election in November, 2012.  Senator Akaka has held the  second Hawaii Congressional seat for 22 years.  Prior to that, he served in the United States House of Representatives for 13 years.  He is 86 years old. Senator Daniel K. Senator Daniel K. Inouye Speaks Out

Senator Daniel K. Inouye is in the islands on a break from Congress.  He addressed the Federal budget and other issues in a televised appearance last week. Regarding the possibility of a government shutdown if Congress does not approve the budget by March 1:  Senator Inouye said both Houses of Congress are working together to avoid a shutdown.  He said he fully expects an emergency appropriations bill to be enacted before the deadline, which will give a 30-day grace period for Congress to work out details.
