Alfred Berdon III is out of jail on bail.  Thursday he was in court to answer a charge of violating probation for a 2007 conviction for a road range incident, in which Berdon punched another man in the face causing him to lose his eye.  For that incident, Berdon was initially sentenced to a year in jail, to be served on weekends, and five years probation.  He was in court for a DUI in 2011, which violated his five years of probation.   The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports that although County Prosecutors asked for no bail,…

Monday Truck Driver to Stay in Jail on Other Charges

Major Sam Thomas of Hawaii Police confirmed that Alfred Berdon III, the driver of the truck who was responsible for the deaths of two women Monday and serious injuries to five others, will stay in jail.  He appeared in court Thursday morning on a separate motion to revoke his probation, which was granted.  Berdon will be in State custody.  Berdon was convicted of a DUI in August, 2012, and of a previous road rage incident in 2007 and had been on probation. From Hawaii Police Department: A 17-year-old Pa’auilo boy died Friday (September 7) from injuries he received in a motor vehicle/pedestrian crash at the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway (Route 19) and Pa’auilo Makai Road in the Hamakua District. The victim was identified as John DeLuz, of a Pa’auilo address. Responding to a 5:32 p.m. call, Hamakua patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit officers determined that the victim had exited a Hele-On bus that was stopped on the mauka side of the road, ran in front of the bus and ran out into the highway. From Hawaii Police Department: The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawai’i recognized Officer Aaron Yamanaka on Thursday (August 23) as “Officer of the Month” for August. Yamanaka, a school resources officer assigned to the Hamakua District, was honored for his role in the arrest of a suspected car thief. The mailing address for the Police Department’s Hamakua District station in Honoka’a will change from a post office box address to a physical address beginning next month. Hawaii County Declared Federal Disaster Area–Drought

Governor Neil Abercrombie has announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated Hawai’i County as a primary natural disaster area resulting from ongoing drought conditions. The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawai’i recognized Sergeant Jefferson Grantz on Thursday (November 17) as “Officer of the Month” for November. Grantz, who is assigned to the Hamakua District, was honored for his patient negotiation with a suicidal minor on September 30. When the runaway boy held a knife to his chest on the roof of an abandoned house and threatened to kill himself, Grantz spent three hours calmly negotiating with him until the boy gave up the knife. Redistricting Commission Meets Thursday–Current Plan Wipes Out Hamakua

The Hawaii County Redistricting Commission meets Thursday, and their current proposal seeks to eliminate Hamakua as a separate district. Based on Hawaii County’s current census count, each of the 9 County Council districts should have close to 20,462 residents.  The nine volunteer members of the Redistricting Commission have to decide where to draw the boundaries. The Redistricting Commission currently is focusing on, Plan A as amended,  but another plan, Community Plan 40,  is being considered as an alternative.   Plan A is intended to keep Volcano with Puna, rather than Ka’u.  The current 6th District of…

Missing Woman’s Remains Found in Hamakua

From Hawaii Police Department: Big Island police have identified human remains found on March 28th, 2011 as that of a missing Hilo woman. Acting on a tip, detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section located the badly decomposed remains in an isolated field in the Hamakua District. The site is part of a former sugar cane field. Due to the remains advanced state of decomposition, x-rays and dental comparisons were used to positively identify the remains as that of 46 year-old H. Hatayama of Hilo. Hatayama was the subject of a missing person case…
