California Man Robbed Monday Night in Kona

From Hawaii County Police: Big Island police are investigating the robbery of a California man Monday night (October 15) in Kona. At 10:35 p.m., Kona patrol officers responded to a report of a robbery in the rear parking lot of Ali’i Sunset Plaza, which is located between Kuakini Highway and Ali’i Drive in Kailua-Kona. A 50-year-old Los Angeles man reported that he walked in the direction of a group of males at the rear of the plaza, where he was attacked by two of them. Big Island police have identified the man who died Thursday, October 11, from a two-vehicle crash on Highway 11 in front of Hirano Store as 57-year-old John K. Isabel Jr. of Glenwood.   A van driven by a 33-year-old woman was heading towards Hilo when it slammed into Isabel’s station wagon.  The van flew in the air and flipped over, landing on its roof.   Bystanders helped extricate the woman from the vehicle.   When Hawaii County Fire Department personnel arrived she was sitting near the van.  They transported her to Hilo Medical Center with chest,…

State revenues are up, which bode well for the economy’s future.   Since the start of this fiscal year on July 1, 2012, the state has taken in $1.3 Billion in General Excise Tax revenues, which is 10 % more than last year at the same time. GET is collected on almost anything sold in the State, including services, and is an important source of revenue. The new Hawaii County (temporary) Elections Administrator, Lehua Iopa, said Wednesday that the first round of absentee ballots should be in the mail Monday, October 15, or shortly thereafter.     The last day to request an absentee ballot, either for this election only or to receive permanent absentee ballots, is October 30. Absentee ballots may be returned by mail or taken to  the Hawaii County Elections offices in Kona at West Hawaii Civic Center and in Hilo at 25 Aupuni Center.  Iopa said they may also be returned to any of the three walk-in absentee polling…

Update:  John Tucker’s initial court appearance is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today, Thursday, October 11, in the Honolulu U.S. District Courtroom of U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry M. Kurren.  FBI Agent Tom Simon says he will release the criminal complaint after the court hearing. From Hawaii County Police: A 32-year-old Utah woman died Monday (October 8) from a motorcycle crash in the area of Akoni Pule Highway at the 28-mile marker in the area known as Waikama, close to Polulu Valley.   The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. A 35-year-old Utah man was operating a rented 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle and traveling northwest on Akoni Pule Highway with his wife riding on the back, when he swerved to avoid a car that crossed the centerline into his lane. Hawaii County Police advised at noon that a motorcycle crash closed Akoni Pule Highway, Highway 270.  The highway reopened shortly after 2 p.m. The accident was between the 27 and 28 Mile Markers on Akoni Pule Highway, north of Kawaihae.  Akoni Pule Highway goes between Kawaihae and Hawi. An alternate route for getting between Hawi and Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway is to use Kohala Mountain Road, which goes directly from Hawi over the mountain to Waimea, then go down towards the ocean towards Kawaihae. Hawaii County voters will go to the polls in a few weeks and face decisions not just about candidates, but about issues.  There are six County Charter Amendments on the ballot, and two State Constitutional Amendments.  The State Amendments deal with authorizing bonds to get funds to loan to the owners of at-risk dams for repairs, and with allowing the State Supreme Court Chief Justice to appoint emeritus judges, those who are retired but could be helpful in reducing the court’s backload.  They could also serve as mentors to new judges. Hawaii County Fire Department personnel spent Friday  night at the scene of an approximate 8 to 10-acre brush fire that broke out Friday around 11:45 a.m. just makai of Hualalai Road, near Hualalai Elderly Housing, between Kuakini Highway and Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.  They stayed at the scene until the fire was completely out.  By noon Saturday, a bulldozer was clearing part of the land and creating new fire breaks. Smoke from the fire was visible throughout Kailua-Kona early Friday afternoon.  Police Chief Harry Kubojiri said the smoke was the reason the County began evacuating some…

4 p.m. update:  Hawaii County Fire Department says the fire is contained, and Hualalai Road between Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway and Kuakini is open.  However, firefighters will remain on the scene to monitor hotspots and continue to fight any flareups.
