K Mart Kona and Lex Brodie’s Tire presents the Keiki Halloween Costume Contest and Safety Event on Saturday, October 20.  The free event runs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., right by the front entrance to K-Mart.   The Hawaii Police Department will present their Halloween Safety and Keiki I. D. Kurtistown Man Charged with Car Theft

From Hawaii Police Department: Big Island police have charged a 30-year-old Kurtistown man with a variety of offenses following his arrest on Monday (October 8) in Puna for allegedly stealing a car. On August 17, at about 6:30 a.m., police received a report of a sighting of a vehicle that had been reportedly stolen from a home in Kurtistown. The stolen vehicle was recovered but the driver fled prior to the officers’ arrival. Claude Keone Krause was identified as the driver and police were seeking him for questioning. From Hawaii Police Department: Big Island police are investigating a reported robbery that occurred early Saturday morning in Puna. On October 6 at about 3 a.m., a 67-year-old Volcano man reported that he was filling water containers at the county water spigots in Kurtistown when he was confronted by a lone male, who initially started a conversation with him. The suspect reportedly assaulted the victim and stole his wallet. Another male suspect appeared and was seen rummaging through the victim’s parked vehicle. Both suspects fled the area on foot. Hilo Officer Ryan Domingo Honored by Statewide Police Group

Officer Ryan Domingo has been named Hawai’i Police Department’s “Officer of the Year” by the Hawai’i State Law Enforcement Officials Association (HSLEOA).  Domingo is a South Hilo Patrol officer with nine years of service with Hawaii Police Department. Domingo was honored for administering life-saving first aid to a victim of gunshot wounds. On May 13, police responded to a disturbance involving gunshots in Hilo. At the scene, officers quickly identified and arrested a suspect, and Domingo found a 55-year-old woman lying on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood. He immediately applied pressure to…

Spear Fisherman Dies at Coconut Island Friday

Hawaii Police Department reported that on Friday, October 5, at approximately 11:20 a.m., officers responded to Coconut Island for a reported spear fisherman in distress.   Fire Department Rescue personnel were already on scene.  A 77-year-old man had been found on the bottom of the ocean and was brought to the shore by bystanders.  By the time rescue personnel arrived, he was out of the water and unresponsive.  The man was transported to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Traffic One Way Saturday Near St. Joseph’s School

From Hawaii Police Department: A temporary one-way traffic pattern will be in effect along a portion of Kapi’olani Street on Saturday, October 6. Between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., traffic will flow in the Puna direction only on Kapi’olani Street between Hual’lai Street and Wailoa Street. The temporary one-way traffic pattern, allowed under the Hawai’i County Code (Section 24-10), will be in effect to accommodate the annual Country Fair held by St. Joseph School.

Sharon Hui is described as 5-foot-3 to 5-foot-6, 130-160 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair. She may be in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates or Kona areas. From Hawaii Police Department: In a continuing effort to raise public awareness about alcohol laws pertaining to beach parks, Community Policing officers on the Big Island and representatives of the Salvation Army waved anti-drunk driving signs Friday (September 28) along the road that leads to and from several beach parks in Hilo. Hilo Man Drowns After Rescuing Son

From Hawaii Police Department: A 34-year-old Hilo man who nearly drowned over the weekend died Thursday (September 27) from the incident. Chris Broussard of Hilo and his 9-year-old son were snorkeling in a tide pool in the Brown’s Beach area Sunday morning (September 23) when a large wave swept the boy out of the tide pool. Bruoussard jumped into the ocean in an attempt to save the boy. By the time bystanders were able to pull the child to safety, Broussard was floating face down in the water. Kurtistown Fire Destroys Dwelling Wednesday Night

Wednesday evening, firefighters were called to a blaze around 7:15 p.m. on Kea Road  in Hawaiian Acres Subdivision in Kurtistown. Firefighters found a 900 square foot single family dwelling fully engulfed in flames.  The  building was vacant with 3 abandoned vehicles on premises.  A power line de-energized by HELCO personnel. Fire personnel worked on knocking down the fire on the south side of the building, working around to the north.  They brought the fire under control using a tanker and two engines. From Hawaii Police Department. Big Island police have located 24-year-old Joel Landsborough of Kailua-Kona, who was wanted on a warrant and in connection with a suspected burglary ring. Landsborough was arrested Friday (September 21) and charged Saturday morning with contempt of court, theft (for an incident at a department store this month) and two counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle (for cars that were stolen from Hilo in August and from Kona this month). His bail was set at $30,300.   He was scheduled for an initial court appearance this week.

Child Temporarily Missing in Mountain View–Found Quickly

Hawaii Police Department issued an alert Monday evening, 6:45 p.m., saying that a 7-year-old child was missing, but they issued another alert at 6:57 saying the girl was found. The 7-year-old girl apparently had been missing since 3 p.m., but once the police got involved, she was located and according to Police Dispatch, all is well.

Farias and Quiocho Get Police Promotions

From  Hawaii Police Department: Police Chief Harry S. Kubojiri has promoted two policemen from the rank of sergeant to lieutenant. The promotions of Mark Farias and Kenneth Quiocho took effect on September 16. Farias is now a lieutenant in Kona Patrol. He joined the Hawai’i Police Department in February 1989 and worked in West Hawai’i as a patrol officer, Vice officer and Community Policing officer before being promoted to sergeant in November 2004. His sergeant assignments included Kona Patrol and the North Kohala District. Quiocho, who has been with the Hawai’i Police Department since August…
