This Thursday, June 14, PBS Hawaii will carry the only debate to be televised statewide to which Congresswoman Mazie Hirono has agreed in advance of the August 11 primary.  She will face her major opponent for the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Senate Daniel Akaka. Congresswoman Mazie Hirono on Thursday released a list of  debates and candidate forums in which she will take part in advance of the State’s Primary Election.  Hirono will be facing several candidates in vying for the Democratic nomination for the U. HPR Completes Fund Drive in Record Time

Hawaii Public Radio, the statewide public radio station which broadcasts from Honolulu, completed their every-six-month pledge drive on Wednesday, April 18, at 4:30 p.m.  They raised $886,000, the amount of money they need to  operate the stations and provide improvements over the next six months. HPR General Manager Michael Titterton and the Board of the nonprofit radio station had set an ambitious goal.  The fund drives have traditionally been ten days.  But the decision was made to set a goal of completing the drive in 8 days–and they met that.   Titterton said there often seemed…

Former Hawaii County Supervisor James Hamasaki Dies

Haruichi “James” Hamasaki, 89, a veteran of the famed  all-Japanese American 442nd Regimental Combat Team and a former Hawaii County Supervisor, has died.  He died March 12, the day before his 90th birthday at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo. Hamasaki was born in Hilo, one of 13 children.  He was attending San Francisco Junior College in 1941.  When World War II broke out, he went to live on his sister-in-law’s truck farm in Stockton, California…but he was interned on May 20, 1942.  He was interned in Stockton, then  spent nine months at…

Garrison Keillor and his Prairie Home Companion gang are on Oahu this week and will tape two programs at the Blaisdell Concert Hall Saturday for airing nationwide Saturday evening, New Year’s Eve,  on National Public Radio. Tickets on Sale Now for Prairie Home Companion

“Prairie Home Companion,” the nationally broadcast radio program developed by Garrison Keillor, will tape two performances in Honolulu on New Year’s Eve.  Tickets are on sale now.   The performances will be live on the East Coast and taped for broadcast in all other time zones, including here in Hawaii.  The programs will be on Saturday, December 31,  at  Honolulu’s Blaisdell concert Hall at 12:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.  The programs will air that same day–the first being the “regular” program, the second a special broadcast for New Year’s Eve. Waikiki Hotels Already Feeling Boost from APEC

Howard Dicus of Hawaii News Now and Hawaii Public Radio reports hotels on Oahu are already getting a bump in occupancy from the upcoming Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit.  Oahu occupancy is up to 85%, from 80% the week before.  Hawaii Island hotel occupancy is lagging at 57%, up only a percentage point from the week before.  Maui hotels are at 70% occupancy with Kaua’i at 69%.  Dicus says neighbor island hotels won’t benefit directly from APEC events, but some attendees will take tours, and some have booked vacations for before or after the summit,…

Hawaii Public Radio Completes Second 2011 Pledge Drive

Hawaii’s statewide public radio station completed its ten-day drive on Friday, October 21, at 5:11 p.m.  having raised $865,976.  Hawaii Public Radio’s president, Michael Titterton, had set the fund drive goal at $861,000, which was exactly the amount needed for the station to continue to be on air for six more months.  The station also counts on corporate donations and underwriting and grants.  It also gets about 10% of its budget from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which is funded by the United States Congress in an appropriation.
