Ahu’ena Heiau Tsunami Damage Repaired

Ahu‘ena Heiau, Inc. has about a month to go to complete a nearly year-long project to restore the reconstruction of Ahu’ena Heiau, which is on the grounds of the King Kamehameha’s Kong Beach Hotel.   Like many buildings and facilities in downtown Kailua Village, the Heiau was significantly damaged by the March, 2011 tsunami.   Volunteers contributed nearly 3,000 hours of service to restore the Anu‘u Tower, Hale Pahu, and Ki‘i as well as repair the tsunami damaged foundation.    Funds were supplied by Hawaii Tourism Authority.   Ahu’ena Heiau is on  the National Register of Historical…

Hawaiian Airlines to Fly to Big Apple

Hawaiian Airlines announced it will fly between Honolulu and New York City starting in June, 2012.  Hawaiian Airlines’ President and CEO, Mark Dunkerley, said adding New York is an important part of the airline’s growth strategy.   Over the last many years, Hawaiian Airlines has expanded their service to include many West Coast and Asian destinations. Direct Mainland Flights Back to Hilo Today

Today’s the day direct mainland service returns to Hilo.   The first flight  from Los Angeles will land in Hilo this evening, Thursday,  at 7:40 p.m.  The flight, operated by the merged United Airlines and Continental Airlines, will be greeted by the Hilo Airport firefighters and a curtain of water showering the plane with greetings.  Big Island Visitor’s Bureau will have hula and entertainment on hand, with local merchants handing out samples, maps, and information.  Each passenger will get the traditional Hawaiian lei greeting.  The Los Angeles Flight, 1563, will leave Hilo at 8:55 p.m. daily…

Hawaii Ecotourism Association to Begin Certifications

The Hawaii Ecotourism Association will begin its Ecotour Certification Program starting with a public meeting held on Maui followed later with meetings on Hawaii, Oahu and Kauai. The goal of this program is to give visitors and residents more information when choosing an ecotour, ensuring the tour is right for them, good for the community and good for Hawaii’s environment. Hawaiian Sailing Club Starts Racing Series June 10

On Sunday, June 10, The Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association (HSCA) will begin its annual racing series. Beginning at 1 pm the race will go from Kahului Harbor to Kaanapali Beach.  They should arrive around 4:30 pm. On Saturday, June 11, between 10 am and 4 pm the association will offer free rides on the Hawaiian Sailing Canoes. On Sunday, the canoes will depart Kaanapali at 9 am and race to Hale O Lono, Molokai. Hawaii Island’s former Mayor, Stephen K. Yamashiro, has died, Big Island News Center has learned from sources close to the family.  Yamashiro served two terms as Mayor, from 1992 until 2000.  An attorney by training, after leaving the Mayor position he worked for Western Unitd Life Assurance Company as a project manager to promote a planned residential development in Hilo.   He also served as a member of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. Yamashiro was born in Honolulu and graduated from Punahou in 1959.  He graduated from the United States Army Artillery Officer’s Candidate School at Fort…

Japanese Disaster Affects Tourism in Hawaii; Moody’s Cuts State’s Credit Rating

(NEW YORK) — While known for its stunning beaches and beautiful flora, Hawaii’s economy has seen sunnier days. The state’s bonds were downgraded by credit agency Moody’s Investors Service, though they’re still at least a notch above troubled New Jersey, California and Illinois in terms of fiscal stability. Hawaii’s outstanding general obligation bonds were downgraded from Aa1 to Aa2 because of the state’s “strained financial operations,” the credit rating agency said. That will make borrowing more expensive for Hawaii, which already has $5.1 billion in outstanding debt. The Aa2 designation is one out of 10…

Hawaii Tourism Authority to Focus on Getting New Visitors

The Hawaii Tourism Authority  voted to spend more than $3 million to do new market saturation programs in key feeder areas on the mainland plus to pursue more flights from Australia, New Zealand, China,  and Korea.  They also said they’re getting the word out through various media outlets that Hawaii is still open for business. Napo’opoo Comfort Station Reopens

Napo’opoo Comfort Station Reopens

The Department of Land and Natural Resources has announced that the comfort station and pavilion at Napo’opo’o in the Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park will reopen Tuesday, March 1.  The facility has been closed since January for renovation and repainting improvements including new toilet fixtures, new security gates, painting of interior and exterior areas, minor structural repairs, BBQ grill repairs, and other related improvements.   Funding was provided by the Hawaii Tourism Authority. The project contractor was Ivan Mochida Contracting, Inc.  The project cost was $42,000.

Big Island Visitors Bureau Promoting Aussie Tourists

A representative from the Big Island Visitors Bureau are in Australia to help promote tourism to the County and State.  Debbie Hogan is part of a fourteen-member delegation fat the Asia Pacific Incentives and Meetings Expo in Melbourne.  Others on the trip include representatives from Hilton, Starwood, Marriott, Hawaiian Airlines, and other members of the Hawaii Tourism Authority team from Oahu, Maui and Kaua’i. On Hawaii Island, tourism is the biggest industry.   This island’s tourist trade is taking longer to recover than Maui and Oahu.

Island Surveillance Cameras Slow to Go Active

From an Associated Press report: Only nine of the 40 surveillance cameras officials have planned to keep watch on the Big Island have been installed as authorities figure out how to pay for the electricity that will power them. The cameras were installed on utility poles jointly owned by Hawaii County, Hawaiian Electric Light Co. and Hawaiian Telcom. The police could pay the same rate the county pays to power its streetlights, but this would require the state Public Utilities Commission’s approval.
