Monday is the last day to write letters of support for Hawaiian Airlines’ application to start a new direct Kona-Japan flight.   Hawaiian is asking businesses and residents to write letters of support to the U. S. The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce is seeking assistance from residents and businesses around the island to help make a direct Kona-Japan flight a reality. Hawaiian Airlines has filed an application for a daily, direct flight between Haneda, Japan and Kona.  It would depart from Kona at 5:50 p.m. from October through May and at 5:30 p.m. from November through April, arriving at Haneda at 10:00 p.m. the following day.  The flight from Haneda to Kona would leave at 11:55 p.m. and arrive in Kona at 12:45 p.m. the same day. Hotel Occupancy Shoots Up Statewide for July

Hotel occupancy is up statewide.  The hotel lodging analysis group Hospitality Advisors says hotels set a statewide record for July monthly room revenue, and the visitor industry is on a pace to set an annual high for both arrivals and spending.   Statewide, hotel occupancy was close to 82%.   Hawaii Island isn’t doing as well as the rest of the state, with hotel occupancy at 64%.  The Sheraton Kona at Keauhou Bay’s General Manager Steve Lundberg says that’s partly a function of airlift, and Hawaii Island needs more flights to get the visitors here.  He…

Hawaiian Air Looking to Add Kona-Japan Flight

In what is excellent news for Hawaii Island, Hawaiian Airlines has told the United States Department of Transportation it wants to add a daily nonstop flight between Kona and Tokyo International Airport, also known as Harada Airport.   But there’s no guarantee the DOT will grant the request. Hawaiian Airlines announced it will fly between Honolulu and New York City starting in June, 2012.  Hawaiian Airlines’ President and CEO, Mark Dunkerley, said adding New York is an important part of the airline’s growth strategy.   Over the last many years, Hawaiian Airlines has expanded their service to include many West Coast and Asian destinations. Mike McCartney, CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, said the new service will generate an estimated $156 million in visitor spending and $17 million in state tax annually for the state’s tourism economy. Hawaiian Airlines Removing Minimum Mile Credit

Hawaiian Airlines will no longer award a minimum of 500 miles for short flights, the airline said in an e-mail to HawaiianMiles members Friday. The removal of the minimum earning for short flights will apply to reservations booked after September 1. HawaiianMiles members currently earn the actual mileage of a flight–with a minimum of 500 miles if their flights are shorter than that length.  All of Hawaiian’s flights within the Hawaiian Islands are shorter than 500 miles.  The longest flight is Honolulu to Hilo at 216 miles; the shortest is Kahului to Kona at just…

Big Island Newspapers Win Publisher Awards

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald won 9 Hawaii Publishers Association Awards in Honolulu last week.  They took seven first-place awards and two second-place awards. The daily East Hawaii newspaper won awards for spot news reporting, editorial enterprise reporting, editorial series, investigative reporting, sports photography, essay photography, excellence in design, and editorial opinion. West Hawaii Today won two awards, for editorial column and excellence in design. UH Hilo Wins Utah Pac West Golf Tourney

The University of Hawaii at Hilo has won the 2011 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Golf Championship at the Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah.  Blake Snyder, a freshman from Seattle, Washington, was the only player to finish below par.  He won by three strokes over BYU-Hawaii’s Jon Scolari.  Snyder turned in rounds of 68, 70, and 75 to finish at 3-under-parr 213 on the 6,875-yard course. Big Island Visitors Bureau Promoting Aussie Tourists

A representative from the Big Island Visitors Bureau are in Australia to help promote tourism to the County and State.  Debbie Hogan is part of a fourteen-member delegation fat the Asia Pacific Incentives and Meetings Expo in Melbourne.  Others on the trip include representatives from Hilton, Starwood, Marriott, Hawaiian Airlines, and other members of the Hawaii Tourism Authority team from Oahu, Maui and Kaua’i. On Hawaii Island, tourism is the biggest industry.   This island’s tourist trade is taking longer to recover than Maui and Oahu.
