The Sanctuary Ocean Count, the signature outreach project for NOAA’s Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, was named the Take Pride in America Outstanding Federal Volunteer Program during a ceremony in Washington, D.C.last week. Take Pride in America®, is a nationwide partnership program authorized by Congress to promote the appreciation and stewardship of our nation’s public lands.   The annual Sanctuary Ocean Count, launched in 1996 when 150 volunteers took to the shorelines of O‘ahu to count Hawaii’s endangered whale population and document the animals’ surface behavior, now draws more than 2,300 volunteers across…

The first confirmed sighting of a humpback whale Thursday in waters off the Big Island marks the beginning of whale season in Hawai‘i and it may even be the earliest humpback sighting to be documented in recent history.   Ocean recreation tour companies Atlantis Submarines, Captain Zodiac, Kona Diving Company and Wild Hawai‘i Ocean Adventures observed an adult humpback whale surfacing off Honokohau Harbor. DLNR Warns Public to Stay Away from the Dead Whale and Sharks

The Department of Land and Natural Resources is warning the  public to keep out of the nearshore and ocean waters off Pahoa, due to the  presence of tiger sharks that are being attracted to a decomposing 50-foot  long sperm whale carcass.   DLNR?s aquatic resources and enforcement divisions are working together to  post shark warning signs and to direct the public to stay out of the water  within one mile on either side of where the carcass located on the rocky  shoreline in front of the Hawaiian Beaches Subdivision.   Numerous sharks are present and…

Volunteers Count Whales Saturday

More than 950 volunteers gathered data from the shores of O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, and Hawai‘i Island for Saturday’s annual Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Ocean Count. Participants tallied humpback whale sightings and documented the animals’ surface behavior during the survey. The sanctuary, which is jointly managed by NOAA and the State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), protects humpback whales and their habitat in Hawaiian waters where they migrate each winter to mate, calve, and nurse their young.   Up to 12,000 humpback whales are found in Hawaiian waters every year. February Whale Count Results In

Volunteers counting humpback whales at the end of February saw an average of four whale every 15 minutes here on Hawaii Island.  On Oahu and Kaua’i, watchers saw an average of five whales every 15 minutes. There were around 800 volunteers at 62 sites on the three islands gathering data for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.  For Maui, the Pacific Whale Foundation conducts the count.
