Gary Washburn, Jazz musician, composer, and director of Grammy-winning Honoka‘a High School Jazz Band for more than 30 years has a reputation nationwide as one of the best music educators in the business.  On Saturday, October 27, he will debut his original musical work, “Earth Life: October Full Moon” at Honoka’a Peoples Theater at 7 p.m. Essentially a jazz/fusion composition, the work includes various musical styles, including traditional and contemporary jazz, funk, pop, ethnic and in some passages, classical.   The performers will be Washburn, Alex Czerny, Doug Johnson and Noa Eads.   The seven-part suite…

UH Sponsors E Waste Disposal in Hilo and Kona

The University of Hawaii will offer free recycling of electronic waste from October 25 to October 27.  Residents may recycle old televisions, computers, and other electronic devices at University of Hawaii at Hilo and at Kealakehe High School from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00  p.m. each day. Additional items that could be recycled include keyboards, monitors, printers, scanners, copiers, wires, cables, cell phones, telephones, and other audio and video equipment.   They will not accept batteries, hairdryers, paper, styrafoam, microwaves, or household appliances.  There is a complete list of what can and cannot be recycled at these…

Second Kona Meeting on Burglaries Set for October 18

Police and members of the County Administration will hold a second informational meeting about the recent rash of burglaries and car thefts in the Kona area and other parts of Hawai’i County. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday (October 18) at the Konawaena High School cafeteria. This is a follow-up meeting to one held September 11.  At that meeting, Hawaii County Police provided names and photos of several suspects.  Within days, they had tips from the public that led to the arrest of several suspects. Monday evening, Lyman Museum will host a talk about the Hawaiian Hoary Bat, and the public is invited. Police Nab One Burglar–Again–Still Looking for Others

Captain Richard Sherlock said Wednesday that police had arrested Joshua Watan, who had previously been arrested in late August,  but was out on bail.  However, they’ve nabbed him again for various offenses.  Police have not yet released details of the arrest nor the charges.
