Ukulele Fest Saturday Night in Waimea

More than 150 students from Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Kealakehe Intermediate School, and Waikoloa School will perform in the Nineteenth Annual Ukulele Festival at Hawaii Preparatory Academy at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 10.  The festival, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Gates Performing Arts Center, located at HPA’s Upper Campus.   The students are directed by Georgia Polakova, Dagan Bernstein, and Lynn Kakugawa (HPA); Gloria Juan Tapa’atoutai (Kealakehe), and Lani Opunui (Waikoloa).   This year’s festival will feature music and dance from the wonderful world of Disney, going back…

Governor Releases Funds for Schools–Including Holualoa, Kealakehe

Governor Neil Abercrombie today announced the release of more than $7.48 million to the state Department of Education (DOE) for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) for improvements, consolidation and new facilities. “These projects will upgrade several of our school facilities and improve efficiencies to accommodating the growing needs of our student population, ensuring a safe, environmentally responsible and productive learning atmosphere for students and educators,” said Governor Abercrombie. “The Legislature has been instrumental in helping to identify and make these CIP funds a priority. National Guard’s Fuata Named Civil Defense Administrator

From Hawaii County’s Office of the Mayor: Hawai’i Army National Guard Col. Benedict Fuata has been selected as the next Civil Defense Administrator for the County of Hawai’i, it was announced  by Mayor Billy Kenoi. Fuata, 50, has been the Commander of the Army Aviation Support Facility in Hilo since 1993. He is also the Guard’s director for logistics. He will transition from his previous position at the National Guard during the coming weeks. Fuata replaces Quince Mento, who retired Dec. 1. Lifetime Hawaii Island resident Dru Mamo Kanuha has announced he will run for the newly-created County Council District 7, representing downtown Kailua Village and the Kona area from roughly Kainaliu north to Kona’s Old Airport.   Kanuha was born in Kealakekua and raised near the shore, in the ahupua’a of Holualoa.  His father, Jerome Kanuha, was also born and raised in Kailua-Kona.  His mother, Debbie Kanuha, was born in Pennsylvania, raised in Redondo Beach, California and has been in Kona for more than 40 years.   The Kanuha family has lived for generations in the Keopu…

Hirono Nominates 5 from Big Island to Service Academies

Five Hawaii Island students are among those nominated by United States Congresswoman Mazie Hirono to American’s service academies.  Hirono nominated 30 students who reside with the Second Congressional District.   The students’ applications are now being considered by the four academies for final selections.  The four military service academies are: the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.   U.S. Representatives and Senators submit nominations to the four service academies.  Each academy’s director of admissions then selects from the submitted lists of nominees who…

Blood Bank Recognizes Biggest Donors (video)

Blood Bank Hawaii is on the island this week recognizing the biggest blood donors.  In Kona Tuesday at the Royal Kona Resort, Blood Bank had 25 donors who had given 56 pints of blood or more.  Jay Tomokiyo was the biggest donor on the island, with 211 pints as of last week.  He said he started donating in 1972, initially because he got time off work and they gave you beer or bourbon when you donated.  But he said he quickly realized the really important thing about donating was the way it helped people.  Tomokiyo…

NFL Football Players and NFL Cheerleaders will hold Youth Clinics for Hawai`i Island intermediate and high school students at Kealakehe High School on Tuesday, January 24, from 3:00-5:30 p.m. and Wednesday, January 25, at Kea’au High School from 3:00-5:30 p.m.  Players and cheerleaders will also visit a local school for an assembly before the clinics. Cpl. Wyethpaul N. Yadao, a Kailua-Kona native and information systems technician with the United States Marines, was one of many Marines who traveled  to Thailand to help with flood relief after the fall floods.   He’s with the United States Marine Corps 7th Communications Battalion.    For the Thailand exercise, he was part of the III Marine Expeditionary Force flood relief command providing humanitarian relief. Marines assisted Thailand forces at the request of the Royal Government of Thailand to help with flood relief efforts, in connection with the U. S. Embassy in Bangkok.  They sent help starting…

UH Hilo Athletics Sponsors Van to UH/Vulcans Game Friday

The Vulcan Athletic Club wants to help University of Hawaii at Hilo fans and former players follow Vulcan Athletics, and renew friendships.   On Friday, December 16, a 15-passenger van will be available for VAC members to attend a men’s basketball game with the University of Hawaii in the Kealakehe High School gymnasium.
