Hawaii County Council will meet Wednesday at 8 a.m. at the Hilo County Council Chambers and take up the matter of overriding two of Mayor Billy Kenoi’s vetoes relating to geothermal development. And not all  Hawaii County citizens want that to happen. The Hawaii County Council will reconvene today, Friday, at 8 a.m. at the Hilo County Council Chambers.  This is a continuation of the meeting that started at 8 a.m. Wednesday. Council Chairman Dominic Yagong invites interested hunters to a meeting to discuss upcoming legislation that will be considered by the Hawaii County Council on June 6, 2012.  The legislation aims to form a Game Management Advisory Council as well as prohibit the practice of aerial eradication of game animals in Hawaii County. There will be a meeting Tuesday, May 29  at the West Hawaii Civic Center, and on Wednesday,  May 30  in the Hilo County Council Chambers.  Both meetings begin at 6:00pm. Final Redistricting Commission Public Hearing Tuesday in Hilo (audio)

Eleven residents from Pahoa, Waimea, and Kona testified at Monday night’s second-to-last public hearing about the Redistricting Commission’s final draft map.  The hearing only lasted 38 minutes, with most testifiers saying they are pleased with the map in its current draft form.  Testifiers from all three locations–Pahoa and Waimea Council ofices by video, and in person at West Hawaii Civic Center, also praised the commissioners.  They said their work was an example of non-partisan work done in the best interests of the entire community. Redistricting Commission Final Meeting This Thursday

Hawaii County’s State Redistricting Commission has its last meeting this Thursday before public hearings later in the month to reveal their final choice for  new Hawaii County District lines. At last Thursday’s meeting,  130 people testified in writing or in person.   The County Redistricting Commission’s job is to put around 20,000 residents in each of 9 county council districts.   The crux of most testimony was similar—the  Commission’s plan moved them out of a district they considered their community of interest.  The primary concerns were eliminating Hamakua as a separate district and splitting it between Hilo…

County Redistricting Commission Hears Unhappy Residents Thursday

The Hawaii County Redistricting Commission held its second-to-last meeting Thursday at the Hilo County Council Chambers, with videoconferencing from the Kona, Waimea, and Pahoa Council Offices.  Seventy seven community members sent in written testimony, with 53 signing up to testify in person from the various offices.   The end product of the Redistricting Commission will be redrawn County Council District lines. Redistricting Commission Meets Thursday–Current Plan Wipes Out Hamakua

The Hawaii County Redistricting Commission meets Thursday, and their current proposal seeks to eliminate Hamakua as a separate district. Based on Hawaii County’s current census count, each of the 9 County Council districts should have close to 20,462 residents.  The nine volunteer members of the Redistricting Commission have to decide where to draw the boundaries. The Redistricting Commission currently is focusing on, Plan A as amended,  but another plan, Community Plan 40,  is being considered as an alternative.   Plan A is intended to keep Volcano with Puna, rather than Ka’u.  The current 6th District of…
