Improvements to Honokohau Harbor Now Underway

Department of Land and Natural Resources started work to upgrade Honokohau Harbor on Tuesday, December 5, following a release of funds by Governor Neil Abercrombie.  The need to fix the aging, crumbling harbor facilities was a key topic during the last Governor’s race.  Residents and users of the harbor were vocal in their requests, and have met with Abercrombie and DLNR Chair William Aila several times since the election.   “The Governor listened to residents of Kona who expressed the need for the harbor improvements and he is responding by initiating work now,” said Aila.…

Monday is Final Queen Lili’uokalani Race

Monday brings the most unusual part of the Queen Lili’uokalani Long Distance Canoe Races, and the newest. This is the second annual Ali’i Challenge, which incorporates long distance canoe paddling with in-water crew changes plus an “Amazing Race” type challenge.  Each team will have six wahine paddlers start with the first half of  a 17.5-mile course, split into two triangles.  The wahine will go north from Kailua Bay, beginning at 9:30 a.m. , to a turn outside Honokohau Harbor.  The return brings them to Kailua Bay, where there will be an   in-water crew change puts…

Abercrombie Promises Honokohau Harbor Fixes

Governor Neil Abercrombie met Saturday afternoon with the Honokohau Harbor users group, and promised starting July 1, work will begin in earnest to improve  Honokohau Harbor.  He said improvements will include new electrical lines, a new water line, a new concrete boat ramp, and restroom improvements.   Earlier Saturday at the LAVA 105 and KKOA studios, he said he, his department heads, and the state legislature were consumed with the legislative session that wrapped up two weeks ago.  He said he had underestimated the amount of the budget deficit and ensuring the state had enough money…

Kona Man Found Dead in Water *** Updated

From Hawaii Police Department, updated April 6: An autopsy conducted Monday (April 4) has determined that 59-year-old Franklin Lewis Smith of Kailua-Kona died of salt water drowning. The autopsy also determined that injuries to his head and leg were consistent with a fall onto rocks. The case has been reclassified as a public accident.  (Please see following story for the original release on this incident.) 52-Year-Old Opihi Picker Dies

HPD- A 52-year-old Kailua-Kona man has died after being found unresponsive Friday (April 1) in waters off of the Kona Coast. The victim has been identified as George Nalimu. Kona patrol officers who responded learned that the victim’s body had been found floating face down by a dive boat at approximately 10:15 a.m., and approximately 100 yards from the shoreline outside of Pawai Bay fronting Queen Lili‘uokalani Children’s Center. Keauhou Kona Yacht Club Has a New Home

The Keauhou Kona Yacht Club, whose building was swept away by the March 11 tsunami, will now have its events at the Kalani Kai Grill at Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort.   Kalani Kai is located on the north end of the resort, oceanside, near Kahalu’u Beach Park.    Commodore Terry Fitzpatrick said he hopes they can rebuild on their original site at Keauhou Bay, but that’s not certain.  A structural engineer has done an inspection, and Fitzpatrick will meet with the property owner, Kamehameha Investment Company, to decide what the next steps are.  He said…

Kailua Pier Still Operating for Ocean Sports Activities

Although Kailua Pier is closed to casual visitors, the ocean sports activities companies say they are operating under almost-normal conditions.  Body Glove, Atlantis Submarines,  and other vendors that use the pier to board passengers  have been able to continue using the Pier if they sign a waiver, have their passengers sign a waiver, and they escort the passengers on and off the pier.  Jack’s Diving Locker owner Teri Leicher said they are currently using Honokohau Harbor to board passengers, but they’ll return to Kailua Pier once they make minor repairs to the area where they…

Senator Solomon Invites Legislators to Hawaii Island

State Senator Malama Solomon (Kohala-Waimea-Hamakua) has invited seven State Senators and two State Representatives to Hawaii Island for a two-day informational visit this Saturday and Sunday, February 26 and 27.   Senator Solomon says that Hawai’i Island is both a place that inspires “big thinking” and has demonstrated leadership in creating innovative public-private partnerships to address big issues.   She says she wants to give the legislative visitors an opportunity to see what can be accomplished with “out of the box” thinking.
