Honolulu Visitors, Residents Warned of APEC Closures in November

The City and County of Honolulu, military officials, the Secret Service, State Department, and other federal officials have announced security restrictions in connection with the upcoming Asic Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) events next month. Roads and access around meeting areas will be restricted, with only residents and employees allowed into some restricted areas.  The restricted zones are near the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Hale Koa Hotel, and the Honolulu Convention Center.  Some meetings will also be at the Ko Olina Resort.  Major General Pete Pawling of the Pacific Command said there will also be restricted…

State Legislature Poised to Reduce Hawaii County Lodging Tax Revenues

The Hawaii State Legislature is poised to reduce the amount of Transient Accommodation Tax  which Hawaii County (and other counties) were expecting.    For the next budget cycle, July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012, Mayor Billy Kenoi’s budget anticipated around $18.6 million in TAT coming to the county.  If the State Senate’s proposal is passed, Hawaii County would receive around $17.3 million.   The funds are those collected by hotels and other temporary accommodations such as condo or house rentals.  The tax was established in 1986.   Although initially it was proposed to fund the Honolulu Convention…
