Supreme Court Says “No” to Akaka’s Election Challenge

The Hawaii State Supreme Court has ruled against Kalei Akaka in her challenge in connection with the August 11, 2012 Primary Election in which she sought to overturn the results of the Democratic Primary for State House District 6.  Akaka lost her bid to become the Democratic nominee by only 45 votes to Nicole Lowen.  Lowen had 1067 votes and Akaka 1022.   Akaka’s suit named her opponents (Lowen, Fred Housel, and Bucky Leslie), the Hawaii County Clerk Jamae Kawauchi, Governor Neil Abercrombie, and State Elections Chief Scott Nago.   She contended the Governor lacked the…

Candidates to Meet in Puna Saturday

The Hawaii County League of Women Voters will sponsor two candidate forums: one on Tuesday, June 19 and the other on Tuesday, June 26 at the Hualalai Academy Bridge Building.   The Tuesday, June 19 forum will feature candidates for State Representative Districts 5 and 6, which are in Kona.  For State House District 5, which goes from Ka’u through South Kona, the candidates include Dave Bateman, running as a Republican in the Primary, and the incumbent, Denny Coffman, a Democrat, and his Democratic Challenger, Leiolani Oyama.   Assuming Bateman wins his race, he will face…

Brittany Smart, current Hawaii County Council Representative for District 6, Ka’u, has announced she will seek election to the Hawaii State House of Representatives District 3 as a Democrat.   Current State Representative Bob Herkes lives in that district and could run, but has instead opted to run for Hawaii State Senate in a newly created fourth Senate District for Hawaii Island. The Hawaii State Reapportionment Commission will hold a public hearing on Hawaii Island to get comment on the newly-created maps which define State Senate and State House district boundaries.  The hearing is today,  Tuesday, February 21, at 6 p.m. at the Hawaii County Council office in Hilo at 25 Aupuni Center and via video teleconferencing at the Kona Council Office at the West Hawaii Civic Center up Kealakehe Parkway at the intersection of Ane Keohokalole Highway. Housel Sets Run for As Yet Unknown State House Seat
