HPA Presents Doo Wop Wed Widing Hood

A cast of 24 seventh and eighth grade students at Hawaii Preparatory Academy will present “Doo-Wop Wed Widing Hood,” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 11 and Friday, October 12 at the school’s Gates Performing Arts Center.  The musical performance is free and open to the public. “Doo-Wop Wed Widing Hood” is a ‘50s musical by Charlie Lovett, with music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur.  The show is directed by Middle School teachers Barbara Kopra and Kelly Buscher. Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) is hosting a series of admission events for prospective K-12 and post-graduate students. Experience Kindergarten, for prospective kindergarteners and their families, will be held at the Village Campus from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Monday, October 8. Students and families will meet kindergarten teacher Hope Soo, and observe her kindergarten class. Soo also will meet with families to provide an overview of the kindergarten program at HPA. Hawaii Preparatory Academy, recently recognized as a Green Ribbon School by the Hawaii State Department of Education, will host two community events to celebrate Earth Day. Both events are free and open to the public. On Sunday, April 15, community members are invited to an earth oven building workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school’s Ulumau Garden, located at the Village Campus.  Skye Hoefke, natural materials builder/earth block mason, and Noah Dodd, HPA’s Ulumau Garden coordinator, will lead the workshop. The National Geographic Society has named Tristan Sienkiewicz, a seventh grade student at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2012 Hawaii National Geographic Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. The 2012 Hawaii National Geographic Bee will be held Friday, March 30, at Leeward Community College Theatre on Oahu. Bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school’s Geographic Bee winner. Hawaii Preparatory Academy has announced a new scholarship program available to students entering grades 6, 7, or 9 in the 2012-2013 academic year.  The Ho’omau I Ka Po’okela (Continuing With Excellence) Scholarship will be awarded to qualifying students with academic potential, as demonstrated by their Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) results.   The scholarship is a merit award, which means families are not required to demonstrate financial need.  For the coming academic year, applicants must attain the following SSAT scores to be considered for the scholarship program: Grade 6:            2040 Grade 7:            2080 Grade 9:…

John Colson Returning to Hawaii Preparatory Academy

Former Waimea Middle School principal John Colson has a new yet familiar  home.   Hawaii Preparatory Academy headmaster Lindsay Barnes announced that Colson will return to the private K through 12 school, where he had served in numerous capacities for 23 years.  Colson will become HPA’s new Acting Director of Development.   Headmaster  Barnes issued a statement Wednesday saying, “Having a gentleman of John’s stature join our administrative team is not an opportunity that comes around every day.”  He noted that Colson is known and admired by many in the HPA community.   Colson was abruptly…

The independent governing board for Waimea Middle Public Conversion Charter School, the Oahu-based Ho‘okako‘o Corp., says the Principal, John Colson, resigned.   They issued a press release Saturday, February 11, at noon, more than a week after Colson indicated he was no longer in charge of the school.  They say there was no impropriety on Colson’s part and praised his work. Two HPA Seniors Named Finalists as National Merit Scholars

Kyle Matsuda and Justin Sandulli, seniors at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, have been named finalists in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Mark Noetzel, HPA Upper School principal, made the announcement.   These academically-talented students will continue in the competition for 8,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million that will be offered in 2012.  Matsuda and Sandulli also have been recognized as AP Scholar with Honor and AP Scholar with Distinction, respectively.   Matsuda, who is a Presidential Scholars Program candidate, is the son of Richard and Leslie Matsuda of Waimea.  Matsuda was…

First Hawaiian Gives $70K Grant to Hawaii Prep

From a media release from Hawaii Preparatory Academy: Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) has received a $70,000 grant from the First Hawaiian Bank Foundation, according to an announcement Tuesday by HPA Headmaster Lindsay R. Memorial Set for Coach Stan Shutes

The memorial service for longtime Hawaii Preparatory Academy coach Stan Shutes has been set for Saturday, September 24.  Shutes passed away on September 9 after a long battle with melanoma.  The memorial will be at HPA’s Davies Memorial Chapel, starting at 2 pm next Saturday.   A reception will follow at HPA’s Waiaka House. Shutes’ internment will be Monday, September 26 at Punchbowl, the Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, on Oahu, at 1 p.m. Shutes’ widow, Sharon, says the family requests no flowers, but says there are two organizations that have been meaningful to the family…
