Long time Hawaii Preparatory Academy cross country and track & field coach Stan Shutes lost his battle with cancer and passed Friday night, September 9, according to Ka Makani Athletic Director Stephen Perry. Shutes was in Stage IV melanoma and under Hospice care at his home in Waimea when he died. While at HPA Shutes cross country and track teams won 36 Big Island Interscholastic Federation titles and two state titles. HPA Energy Lab Receives Living Building Certification

The International Living Building Institute has announced that Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Energy Lab has met all of the imperatives of the Living Building Challenge version 1.3.   The Living Building Challenge is widely regarded as the world’s most rigorous green building performance standard.   HPA’s 6,000 square foot Energy Lab is an educational facility that generates all of its own energy through clean, renewable resources, captures and treats its own water, incorporates nontoxic appropriately-sourced building materials, and operates efficiently.  Sensors monitior light and air flow.  The International Living Building Institute also requires the facility to be beautiful.…

HPA Student Wins $20,000 Scholarship

HPA Student Wins $20,000 Scholarship

Malachi Kobayashi, a senior at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, has been selected as a 2011 Horatio Alger National Scholar.  Kobayashi is one of 104 high school seniors–and the only student from Hawaii–to receive the national award from the Horatio Alger Association.  Each student will receive a $20,000 scholarship to a four-year school of his or her choice and will be honored at the Horatio Alger Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. April 6 to 10, 2011. As a 2011 National Scholar, Kobayashi will travel to Washington, D. C. for an all-expense–paid trip to the National Scholars Conference. …
