Fourth Hike Against Hunger Starts November 3

Will Zucker is hiking against hunger.   Zucker, sales manager at Mahalo Broadcasting (LAVA 105.3fm/KKOA 107.7 fm/KHNU 620 am), will walk the 126 miles  from Hilo up the Hamakua Coast, through Waimea and Waikoloa to Kona, to raise awareness of the need for donations to Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank.   Zucker says his goal for this year’s Hike Against Hunger is 110,000 pounds of food, or the equivalent, donated at KTA stores around the island during his hike.  But he says he really hopes to get to 150,000.  In his 2011 Hike Against…

Kealakehe Chorus and Uke Band to Perform in Kona

The Kealakehe Intermediate School Chorus and Ukulele Ensemble will appear at the Kailua-Kona Library on Saturday, October 27, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. The group’s leader is longtime Kona music teacher and musician Gloria Juan-Tapaatoutai.  The group has performed throughout the island and state, and recently toured Los Angeles where they performed at Disneyland and the Crystal Cathederal in Orange County. There’s no charge for the performance.

California Man Robbed Monday Night in Kona

From Hawaii County Police: Big Island police are investigating the robbery of a California man Monday night (October 15) in Kona. At 10:35 p.m., Kona patrol officers responded to a report of a robbery in the rear parking lot of Ali’i Sunset Plaza, which is located between Kuakini Highway and Ali’i Drive in Kailua-Kona. A 50-year-old Los Angeles man reported that he walked in the direction of a group of males at the rear of the plaza, where he was attacked by two of them. Children 7 to 14 years old are invited to enter the Keiki Triathlon to be held Saturday, October 20, at the Kona Community Aquatic Center and Maka’eo Park in Kailua-Kona. Entry forms will be accepted through Friday, October 12. The triathlon will start at 8:30 a.m. on October 20. The Ironman Foundation® Community Fund will give $128,000 in grant funding to non-profit groups on Hawai`i Island during the 2012 Ironman race season. Over the years, The Ironman Foundation has provided more than $800,000 to local non-profit groups and charitable initiatives on the Island of Hawai`it. Hawaii County Fire Department personnel spent Friday  night at the scene of an approximate 8 to 10-acre brush fire that broke out Friday around 11:45 a.m. just makai of Hualalai Road, near Hualalai Elderly Housing, between Kuakini Highway and Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.  They stayed at the scene until the fire was completely out.  By noon Saturday, a bulldozer was clearing part of the land and creating new fire breaks. This Saturday, October 6, there is a benefit golf tournament for Mokuaikaua Church.  That’s the historic church in downtown Kailua-Kona–the oldest Christian Church in the State.  The congregation was founded in 1820 by Asa and Lucy Thurston.  The current building was built around 1835 to 1837. The tournament is at Kona Country Club’s Ali’i Mountain Course.  It starts at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start, and includes lunch and an awards ceremony.  The entry fee is $100 per golfer, and it is a two-person scramble. Former Kona Residents, the Brinkleys, Pass Away

Former Kona residents Don Brinkley and Marge Brinkley have died.   Their daughter Christie says that Don died on July 14, 2012, of complications from Parkinson’s Disease.  Marge suffered a stroke the day after, and then a heart attack.  She passed away September 9.   Don was a prodigious writer, with over 400 television scripts to his credit.  He wrote for many of the television shows from the 70.   He created Trapper John, M. D., which ran for seven seasons on CBS, and wrote for shows such as Highway Patrol, starring Broderick Crawford.  He…

This Saturday,  state agencies will collect and dispose of expired or unused prescription medications at two locations on Hawaii Island and around the state, as well. Since September 2010, Hawaii, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands have collected nearly 6,700 pounds of expired and unused prescription medications, according to office of the state Department of the Attorney General.  Nationwide, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) says public participation is high.  They’ve held four such events in the past two years. Police Arrest Joel Landsborough

From Hawaii Police Department. Big Island police have located 24-year-old Joel Landsborough of Kailua-Kona, who was wanted on a warrant and in connection with a suspected burglary ring. Landsborough was arrested Friday (September 21) and charged Saturday morning with contempt of court, theft (for an incident at a department store this month) and two counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle (for cars that were stolen from Hilo in August and from Kona this month). His bail was set at $30,300.   He was scheduled for an initial court appearance this week.
